Gladys Joan Hermance
Born: June 22, 1938
Died: December 12, 2008

Joan Hermance, 70, was born June 22, 1938 in Ponca City, Ok to Roy & Edith Haight attended Guthrie schools until her graduation from Guthrie High School in 1956. Joan entered the U. S. Army in 1957 and remained on active duty until 1965. At that time Joan entered the U.S. Army Reserves and retired after twenty-three years of loyal service.

Joan was a veteran of the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. Upon completion of her active duty Joan worked at the FAA as a Computer Operator until her retirement in 1993. Joan was an active member of the Little Axe American Legion Post #0274 and was also an active member of the Order of Eastern Star, Moore, Oklahoma Chapter #504 and served as their Worthy Matron in 1979.

Joan was an avid reader of all books and believed reading was the key to success so much that she volunteered as a Mid-Del School System reading mentor to the students of Traub Elementary for many years. She is survived by her sister Carylon Burkhart and husband, Guy of Choctaw, daughter, Kim Martin and husband Billy, grandsons Cory Martin & wife Melody, Chad Martin and wife Cassie all of McLoud. Two nephews, Guy Burkhart, Jr. of Guthrie, Keith Burkhart & wife, Jeanette and one niece, Julie Avants all of Choctaw. Joan is also survived by four great-grandsons, eleven great-nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.

Services were held Monday, December 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Smith Memorial Chapel in Guthrie, Ok. Nephew, Keith Burkhart officiated services, internment followed at Summit View Cemetery in Guthrie, Ok. Services were under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
