Robert Joseph Hennesy

Born: September 25, 1925
Died: October 12, 2010

Robert Joseph “Bob” Hennesy passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 surrounded by family at Norman Regional Hospital, Norman, OK. Bob was born on September 25, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN to Thomas Joseph and Margaret Elizabeth (McCarty) Hennesy. While Bob was still very young his parents moved to Leadville, CO, where Bob grew up, graduated high school in 1943 and immediately enlisted into the United States Navy, where he served as part of a Carrier Aircraft Service Unit (C.A.S.U) stationed in Holtville, CA for the duration of WWII.

Bob met the love of his life Barbara Jane Keys on leap day, February 29, 1944 at a USO dance on the naval base in Norman, OK. They were married June 30, 1945 in Guthrie at the home of Barbara’s parents, former Guthrie residents Charles W and Marjorie V (Smith) Keys. After Bob was discharged from the Navy, the couple moved to Leadville, CO where their oldest son Alan was born. Two years later they moved to Guthrie and resided there together until Barbara’s death in 2007. They were preceded in death by their infant son, Tommy Joe.

Bob was a devoted and loving father, husband, grandfather, friend and neighbor. Bob worked for 32 years at Tinker Air Force Base retiring as a Training Specialist. Bob left retirement to teach and train machinists for the Oklahoma Vo-Tech program located at Tinker A.F.B.

Bob and Barbara loved to travel, and were part of the Guthrie branch of the Good Sam Camping Club. Bob was a longtime member of American Legion LeBron Post #58, Guthrie, the National Rifle Association, a past Assistant Scout Master of Troop #64 of Guthrie where he served until both of his sons attained the rank of Eagle.
Bob is survived by his children; Alan Hennesy and wife Sue of Lawton, OK; Charlie Hennesy and wife Pattie of Manhattan, KS; and Jane Hopkins and husband Steve of Lexington, OK. Grandchildren include Matt Hennesy of Muskogee, OK; Mark Hennesy and wife Lorrie of Bartlesville, OK; Melanie Snodgrass and husband Jason of Dodge City, KS; Marjorie Sell and husband Logan of Olathe, KS; Katie Willis and husband Jason of Olathe, KS; Rebekah Hennesy of Manhattan, KS; and Samantha & Shane Hopkins of Lexington, OK. Step-grandchildren include Wade Patterson and wife Brook of Topeka, KS; Wyatt Patterson of Topeka, KS; and Lexie Gragg and husband Adrian of Topeka, KS. Great-grandchildren are Taylor and Payton Hennesy of Muskogee, OK; Anthony and Torrie Hennesy of Bartlesville, OK; Mason and Jenson Snodgrass of Dodge City, KS; Corinne Sell of Olathe, KS and Alicia and Aiden Willis of Olathe, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Smith Memorial Chapel with Deacon Roy Ellison officiating. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be Friday, 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 411 North Elm or American Legion, Post 58, 123 North 1st Street, Guthrie, OK 73044.
