Roberta Mae Diaz
Born: November 13, 1916
Died: November 09, 2009

Roberta Mae (McCoy) Diaz was born in Guthrie, OK on November 13, 1916, the oldest child of C.L. "Bill" and Mayme McCoy. She died November 9, 2009 in Sand Diego, CA.

Roberta was a 1934 graduate of Guthrie High School.

In January 1942, just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Roberta became one of the first to respond to the call for women to contribute to the defense of her country. As she freed men to join the military by taking a (previously male) job at Beech Aircraft in Wichita, KS she became one of the original girls known as "Rosie the Riveter".

In 1949 she moved to San Diego, CA where she worked at Convair Aircraft for several years before going to work in the planning department for San Diego County from which she retired.

After two prior marriages she wed Jack H. Diaz in San Diego, CA on October 30, 1954. Jack preceded her in death in 1996.

She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and prior to moving to San Diego was a member of the West Guthrie United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister Loretta (McCoy) Gillette and husband Lawrence; two brothers Billy McCoy and Bobby McCoy and wife Betty; one nephew Terry Cornie; and one niece Roberta Jean "Suzie" Mize.

She is survived by three sons Jim Cobb and wife Sharon of Plano, TX, Bill Cobb and wife Linda, and Jack Diaz and wife Teresa all of San Diego, CA; one sister Dorothy Cornie and husband Lynn of Chico, CA; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Roberta.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633 (www.alz.org) or American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 515, Northhampton, MA 01061-0515 (www.macular.org).

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 19, 2009 at West Guthrie United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
