H.A. Bud Carter, Jr.
(June 27, 1931 - December 10, 2009)
H.A. Bud Carter, Jr., much loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to his home in heaven on December 10, 2009 at age 78. Bud was born to Hearl Adam and Virginia Carter on June 27, 1931 in West Fork, Arkansas. On August 25, 1953, Bud married his cherished wife, Mary Fogarty Carter. They had a wonderful marriage lasting 56 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William E. Carter. He is survived by his brother, Jack B. Carter of Little Rock, AR; his loving wife Mary; daughter Debbie Priest and her husband Monty; daughter Ginger Freeman and her husband Jerry; son H.A Carter III and his wife Kelly; grandchildren Rocky Freeman and wife Marcia, Marcy Priest Jackson and husband Bryan, Buddy Priest, Sonny Priest, Adam Carter IV, Chelsea Carter, Austin Carter, Carlye Carter; and great-granddaughter Martha Kay Freeman. Bud graduated from West Fork High School and then attended Oklahoma A&M College where Coach Henry Iba recruited him to play basketball. There he met Mary Fogarty at the Baptist Student Union. After graduating, he then served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He worked for many years as an insurance adjuster for Crawford & Company in Oklahoma City. While working and raising a family, he attended the OCU School of Law at night and became licensed to practice in the state of Oklahoma in 1962. In 1973, he was licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court. He was extremely proud that his son-in-law Jerry and his son H.A. followed in his footsteps also graduating from OCU School of Law and joining his practice, which they have continued under the name of H.A. Bud Carter, P.C. following his recent retirement. Bud was also a devoted Christian attending Mayfair Baptist Church from 1957-1993. There, he served as a Deacon, sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. He and Mary then attended Newchurch where his son-in-law, Monty, is the pastor. At Newchurch they continued teaching and serving for the past 16 years. Bud truly loved his entire family, always taking them on annual vacations to Lake Tenkiller and snow skiing in Keystone, Colorado. (Always the athlete, he snow-skied until age 70!) However, his proudest family accomplishment was to see all of his children, their spouses, his grandchildren and his great-granddaughter each accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. Bud and Mary were married in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Jerene and her husband, Branson Crockett. They were not only brother and sister-in-laws, but lifelong friends who enjoyed traveling and celebrating their many wedding anniversaries together. They traveled to many places such as Hawaii, Ireland, England and others including Maine, which was their favorite. Faithful to O.S.U., Bud was a member of the O Club. He and Mary have been members of the OSU Alumni Association, Posse Club and season ticket holders to both basketball and football games for many years. Another one of his loves was his ranch in Wellston, Oklahoma where he developed many dear friends and enjoyed raising cattle, fishing, and watching his grandchildren ride motorcycles. More than 30 years ago, Bud and Mary established a tradition of having Farm Day at the ranch the day after Thanksgiving. All the family came out and enjoyed a day of fun ending with a hayride to the Picnic Pond and a campfire with songs and family stories. Bud is loved and will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 14 at Newchurch, located at 9201 N. Rockwell, Oklahoma City, OK, 73162. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Newchurch, to be used for ministries that Bud loved.
