Sharen Yvonne Bowers

Died: July 31, 2015

Sharen Yvonne (Sears) Bowers, a beloved daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, left the physical struggles of this earthly world to unite with her Heavenly Father July 31st, 2015.

Sharen was the first child born to the late Everett (Leroy) Sears & Voneta Maxine (Denny) Sears. She was born at the Benedictine Heights Hospital in Guthrie, OK, July 27, 1949. She attended Guthrie Schools from K-12 graduating in 1967. Sharen established many friendships that she cherished throughout her life.

Sharen grew up in the First Southern Baptist Church, deciding as a child to follow her Lord Jesus Christ. She served for over 40 years in the Nursery Dept. FSBC is where Sharen met her future husband Steve Alan Bowers.

Steve and Sharen were married January 17, 1969, and their union produced 3 children: their 1st child Sharman Y. (Bowers) Jones of Meridian, married Shawn L. Jones. They have 3 children Shayla R. Jones, John L. Jones, and Rachel E. Jones. Their 2nd child Stephanie D. (Bowers) Hastings of Guthrie, married Scott D. Hastings. They have 4 children Landon S. Hastings, Sarah D. Hastings, Connor J. Hastings, and Maddison K. Hastings. Landon is married to Brittney J. (Southerland) Hastings and they are expecting Sharen’s 1st great grandchild. Their 3rd child, and only son, is Shane A. Bowers of Guthrie. Shane is married to Marissa J. (Watson) Bowers. They have 2 children Emma G. Bowers and Ayden W. Bowers. Sharen’s children & grandchildren were the greatest joys in her life.

Sharen was proud to be a product of the “Heartland” and had long genealogical lines in Guthrie. She was a valued member of the Logan County Genealogical Society. She valued pioneering strength and believed in having strong family roots. She was drawn to many organizations that kept history alive. She was an ambassador for her hometown and was even recognized by Western Horseman and The Old West Magazine as being one of the most knowledgeable on Guthrie history.

Sharen, along with her family, participated in pioneer and living history reenactments and was a part of the Cimarron River Settlers Association. Sharen had a heart for volunteerism and served on many local committees including Guthrie FOP Auxiliary, Town and Country HCE, Mobile Meals, First Capital Quilt Guild, Friends of the Guthrie Museum Complex, Victorian Walk, and Guthrie Historical Preservation Commission. She worked many festivals in Guthrie such as Tom Mix Festival, The Sandplum Festival, the 89’er Celebration, Victorian Walk Nights, Relay for Life, the Bluegrass Festival and many more.

After Sharen’s children were school age she started working outside the home. She had many occupations including secretarial work for the Logan County Aging Services, owning and operating an ice cream parlor in the Victor Mall as well as owning and operating a mercantile in the 89’er Mall. Sharen spent over 20 years working as a secretary for The Oklahoma Historical Society at Guthrie Museum Complex before retiring in 2010. Along with her full time job she also helped with multiple family businesses’ including her husband’s carriage business Love is Carriages, and her parent’s ceramic business L.V.S. Ceramics.

Sharen is survived by her mother, Voneta Sears; husband, Steve Bowers, all of her children and grandchildren, one half-sister Terry Ketch Peck of Edmond, many nieces and nephews as well.

She is preceded in death by her father, Leroy Sears and sister, Dianna Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at First Southern Baptist Church, 202 East Noble Avenue, Guthrie, with Pastor James Hunt and Chaplain Gene Owen officiating. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Noon – 8:00 PM

Sharen’s death has left a large hole in the hearts of her family, friends and community but her love and legacy will continue for generations.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Friends of the Guthrie Museum Complex, 406 East Oklahoma Avenue, Guthrie, OK 73044.
