Obituary for Harlan Filtz

Harlan Ivan Filtz, 89, of Orlando, Oklahoma died on September 9, 2015, at Stillwater Medical Center with his family by his side. Harlan was born on August 4, 1926, to Wilmer Walter (Dutch) and Bessie (Michaels) Filtz in Orlando, OK.

Harlan attended Orlando Public Schools. He served as Corporal in the U.S. Army, Infantry during WWII with Headquarters Company in the Philippines, and helped transport Gen. Wainwright after his release at the end of the war. He worked for 42 years in the oilfield as an engineer-pumper for Champlin, Inca Oil Co. and Ron Grubb Oil Corporation. He was also an Oklahoma State University Security Officer for 22 ˝ years, a farmer, and a rancher, always having a good horse to ride. Harlan was a member of the First Christian Church.

He married the love of his life Claudine Harbison on June 28, 1947, in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, and soon settled in the Orlando community where they have lived ever since.

Harlan loved his country music. He played his old Gibson guitar at many a barn dance and party during his younger years, but just making music with his friends was one of his greatest joys. As arthritis later limited him from playing his guitar and the fiddle, he still enjoyed playing his harmonica, especially with his great-grandson Mason. Harlan and Claudine were charter members of the Territorial Squares square dancing group in Guthrie.

Harlan was a hardworking man who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, spinning tales and talking about the good old days. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Claudine; daughter, Judy Lynn Smith and fiancé Rawley Duntley; son, Robert Lee Filtz and wife Linda; sisters, Iva Caudle, Norma Jerome (Lyle) and Wilma Wright; and brother, Norman Filtz (Jan); eight grandkids; 14 great-grandkids; and two great-great-grandkids with two more on the way; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Harlan Dean Filtz; daughter, Marcia Dee Wooden; brother, Robert Filtz; son-in-law, Derrell Smith; and granddaughter, Laurie Barnicoat.

The family will greet visitors from 4:00 - 6:00 pm Sunday, September 13 at Strode Funeral Home, Stillwater. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, September 14 at the Orlando Christian Church. Interment will follow at Lion’s South Marshall Cemetery (Pleasant Ridge Cemetery), Marshall. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
