Helen Maxine Wiss-McNeil
Born: August 08, 1923
Died: March 12, 2016
Helen Maxine Wiss-McNeil was born August 8, 1923 at home in Crescent, OK, to Margaret Susan (Kuver) and Hallie Freeman Fillmore. She is the oldest of the four Fillmore children. She fondly recounted being excited for each new addition to the family so she could stay home and care for the baby, instead of picking cotton in the field with her family. Helen attended school in Crescent. She told of the many hot and cold days she walked two miles to and from her home to the one room school house at Oak Valley. The family moved to Mulhall during Helen’s high school years, and she graduated from Mulhall in 1941. After graduation, Helen went to work at Kress and later as an operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. During this time she would live in a boarding house during the week and ride the train to Crescent on the weekends to stay with her family.
Helen married Bill Lee Wiss on December 31, 1945. In the early years of their marriage, they lived in Guthrie before buying the family farm in the Mulhall community. They welcomed three children into their family, Sharon, Rodney and Janel. She spent her days raising kids, driving wheat trucks, and loading cattle. Every Sunday, she faithfully loaded her kids into the car and drove them to Antioch and Mulhall Christian Church. Not attending church was never an option, if you thought you might be sick you better have a temperature. This was the only way you were staying home on a Sunday! Over the next 40 years, Helen worked many different jobs and she loved all of them, but her favorite was selling Avon to her community. She enjoyed having an excuse to call on her neighbors and spend the afternoon visiting.
After Bill passed away in 1990, she held down the family farm keeping a close eye on the cattle and her growing number of grandchildren. In 1997, she moved to Guthrie and in 1998 she married Maurice (Mac) McNeil. She and Mac enjoyed their retirement by traveling with the Good Sam’s Travel Club and gardening.
Helen passed away on March 12, 2016 at Golden Age Nursing Home.
