Merle Austin Houck was born February 9, 1928 in Crescent, Oklahoma to Austin LeRoy and Alice (Oswald) Houck. He passed away January 4, 2019 in Guthrie, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years.
Merle graduated from Big 4 schools in 1945 and on June 27, 1945 he married Wanda Stanbrough. Merle loved his cows and was a farmer, rancher, and a builder. He built many homes and barns in Crescent, Logan County, and Kingfisher County. He helped start Rural Water District 2 and served on the Board of Directors for over 25 years. Merle also served on the Oakland-Knowles Cemetery Board for many years. Merle and Wanda were on many bowling teams and loved playing cards. They traveled all over the west part of the country which included Alaska and then south of the border to Mexico City. Merle loved spending time with friends and family, especially his grandkids. He was a adventurist person who after the age of 40 earned his pilots licenses. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Crescent.
Survivors include his wife Wanda of the home; one son, Dennis Houck and wife Debra of Guthrie; one daughter, Judith Skaggs and husband Ronald of Edmond; one daughter-in-law, Jane Houck; two brothers, Evan Dale of Crescent and Danny of Edmond; two sisters, Corrine Sardis of Oklahoma City and Darlene MacPherson of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Sarah, Jonathan, Lori, Brian, Stacey, Chris, and Stephanie; seven great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Alexa, Emma, Hannah, Carter, Brady, and Isabel. He is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Clayton, and two brothers, Victor and Earl Ray.
Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Crescent with Rev. Paul Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland-Knowles Cemetery in Crescent. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to the First Baptist Church or the VFW in Crescent. Services are under the direction of Abernathy Aaron Funeral Home in Crescent.
