Donald Lee Hixon passed from this world on April 5, 2018 at the age of 86 in Crescent, Oklahoma.
Don was born in Hennessey, Oklahoma on November 9, 1931 to Virginia Mae and Virgil L. Hixon. He married Margaret Ann Copeland of Kingfisher on October 28, 1950 in El Reno, Oklahoma. From this union, they had two sons, Gary Lynn and Larry Don. They were married for 67 years.
Don graduated from Big Four High School in Kingfisher, Oklahoma in 1950. He began farming in 1952 in Kingfisher, moving to Crescent in 1953.
Don started Central State College in 1954, while still running a Grade A Dairy and farming full-time. He sold the Dairy in 1955 to attend Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Arts. He received his Minor in Business from Oklahoma City University in 1960, and started his Masters at Oklahoma State University. He had a love of learning and was an avid reader his whole life through.
Don’s employment outside farming included Goodman Hardware, Black Sivales and Bryson, Oklahoma City Public Schools as a Teacher, General Electric Credit Corporation, and finally J.I. Case Credit Corporation where he retired from his position as Credit Manager in 1976 to farm full time. Don’s love of farming dates back to his teenage years where he would sleep in the fields and wake up before dawn to start plowing. He and Margaret bought their first farm at Crescent in 1964, which led to them purchasing several more farms every few years until they acquired 1,060 acres. Working the fields, ranching his cattle and maintaining his equipment was where Don enjoyed spending his days. He especially loved having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren join him on the farm and in his shop. Many memories were made with him showing them how to cut wheat, bale hay, round up cattle and repair broken parts.
He was also a skilled craftsman and welder. He remodeled and built many things through the years, including a motorcycle, a go cart for his children and several trailers. He could fix just about anything that was broken. Don and Margaret had the home she was raised in moved from Kingfisher to their farm in Crescent. After he retired, he remodeled and built onto the home enlarging it several thousand square feet. Recently he added an additional family room where many happy family gatherings and celebrations were held.
Don was on several community boards in the Crescent area. He served on the Logan County Rural Water District #2 for 25 years in the capacity of Secretary, Treasurer and President, the Crescent Co-Op board for 10 years, 6 of those as President and First Christian Church Board where he served as Elder, Deacon and Board Chairman.
