Larry Leonard Mayes
(April 5, 1949 - January 18, 2011)
Larry Leonard Mayes, a Bristow resident, passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa at the age of 61.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. , Friday, January 21, 2011 at Tri-County Church of Christ in Cushing. Mr. Kyle Wright and Mr. Dorsey Stoddard will officiate. Interment will follow at Meridian Cemetery, Meridian, Oklahoma. Arrangements are entrusted to Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing, Ok.
Larry was born on April 5, 1949 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Tomie Lee and Lilly Virginia (Davis) Mayes.
He grew up in Chickasha, while in high school his family moved to Oklahoma City.
Larry graduated from Classen High School in 1967.
He entered the U.S. Marines, serving his country proudly. After returning from the service, he married the love of his life Nelda Jean Herring on December 24, 1969 in Cushing. They traveled to numerous states while he worked in construction.
He also was an asphalt aviator and welder over the years. Larry liked to ride horses and motorcycles. In his younger years, he rode a bull. He never left his home without wearing his spurs.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Larry is survived by his wife Nelda Jean of 41 years, sons Joe Mayes and wife Julie of Bristow, Edward Mayes and wife Lori of 29 Palms, California, Geren Mayes and wife Patricia of Cushing, daughters Bobbie Wall and husband Jeff of Rogers, Ar., LaJeanna Lane and husband Mike of Ripley, Sissy Lynn Adair of Cushing, mother Lillian Virginia Geren of Cushing, brothers Mike Geren and wife Linda of Cushing, Ben Mayes of Verden, Martin Mayes and wife Stephanie of Verden, sisters Norma Self and husband Franklin of Cement, Veda Fay Morse and husband Tom of Chickasha, Patricia Aileen Sims and husband David of Chickasha, Rachel Robinson and husband Donald of Chickasha, twenty grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his fathers, step-mother Emma Fay Mays, sister-in-law Kay Mayes, two grandchildren, nephews Mikie and Robbie, and his father-in law. Condolences and online guest book are available at www.palmermarlerfh.com.
