W. C. Briscoe

image
Born: August 26, 1928
Died: November 19, 2013

W.C. Briscoe, 85, went to be with the Lord on November 19, 2013 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He was born on August 26, 1928 in Coolidge, TX to Allen Briscoe (WWII—US Army Veteran—Private First Class) and Sarah (Cornish) Busby.

He attended school in both Coolidge & Muleshoe and entered the workforce at a youthful age. W.C. went on to become a professional truck driver and logged over 2 million miles during his trucking career. After retiring from trucking, he opened fruit stand where patrons lovingly called him “lefty.”

He was a kind, friendly man who never met a stranger. He easily communicated with persons from all walks of life. He pushed his children to soar as eagles, soaring above difficult circumstances and challenges, as he did throughout his life.

He gave unique and personable nicknames to his children and to those he loved. He also had a special way of making not so pleasant situations bearable through laughter. He had very vivid and concise memory of life events. Until his last days, he was readily able to recall his grandmother’s funeral in 1939, Ms. Nancy Briscoe, who was born a slave but died a freed woman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Leona Pearl Briscoe.

Those who are privileged to carry on his legacy and cherish his memories are his wife, Denora Briscoe, seven children, Barbara (Eddie Ray) Briscoe Taylor; Sandra (John) Briscoe Williams; Chas Allen Briscoe; Vivian Finch; Julius Ray Briscoe, Debra (Leonard) Washington; and Melanie (Dennis) Lee and two very special cousins who were as his sisters, Vernell Hatten and Willene Hudson; more than 50 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and countless cousins, family and friends.

Funeral services for W. C. will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 25, 2013 at Grant Street Church of Christ, 211 East Grant Street, with Reverend Mark Vaugn officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be held Sunday 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.
