Carolyn Sue (Shamblin) Herndon passed away Friday, December 9, 2022 following a lengthy illness at the age of 70. She was born to Orville and Ada (Stickles) Shamblin on May 9, 1952 in Bloomington, Indiana. She married Jerry South in 1968 and they moved with their son, Shawn, from Scottsburg, IN to Chandler, OK in 1976. Due to her excellent medical care, Jerry survived many years with End Stage Renal Disease until he passed in 1986. Carol later married Carl Herndon, and together they raised Carol's nephews, Joey and Robert Coleman, and Carl's two sons, Robert and Carl Dean.
One of Carol's greatest accomplishments was graduation from Gordon Cooper's Licensed Practical Nursing Program. She went on to work as a nurse at Stroud, Shawnee, and Baptist Hospitals as well as working on ambulances, in emergency rooms and as a dialysis nurse.
Carol enjoyed being around livestock and rarely met a dog or horse she couldn't train including success on some cats.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Ada; husbands, Jerry South, Carl Herndon; sisters, Betty King, Cheryl Coleman, Robin Shamblin; stepsons, Carl Dean and Robert Herndon. Survivors include her son, Shawn South and his wife Rachelle of Chandler; grandsons, Dustin South of Meeker, Wade South of Chandler; nephews, Joseph Coleman of Midwest City, Robert Coleman of Clarksville, TN; great-nephew and niece Ryan and Avery Coleman of Midwest City; cousin and caretaker, Charlene McElhiney of Chandler; cousins, Bonny Lamb of Clinton, MS, Patty Rocco and Jim Goode of Panama City, FL; sister-in-law, Louella Herndon along with other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 16, 2022 at the First Christian Church of Chandler with a private interment following in the Oak Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
