Joy Mae Crews Chandler passed away from earth to the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, November 7, 2010, in Ponca City, Okla. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, November 12, 2010, at First Baptist Church in Norman, Okla., with Ministers Kenneth Chandler Maddox and John O’Dell officiating.
Interment will follow at 2 p.m. Friday at Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler, Okla. Pallbearers will be James Cheng, Robert Hart, Greg Hoag, John Maddox, Kenneth Chandler Maddox, Stephen Morrow, Art Mould and Adam Purvis. Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Okla.
Joy was born March 25, 1920, in Henryetta, Okla., the second daughter of John Luther Crews and Ida Mae Treadway Crews. After graduation from Wellston High School, she attended Oklahoma A&M University and earned her teaching degree from Central State University. She married Carl Frederick Chandler on April 12, 1942. Carl and Joy were blessed with two daughters, Candace Chandler Hart and Sharon Chandler Maddox. Joy was a teacher at Sunflower School, Chandler High School, and Newcastle Elementary School. After 20 years living on Army bases in the U.S. and Germany, Joy and her family settled in Norman, where they resided for nearly 50 years. Chandler was an active member of First Baptist Church of Norman.
Joy is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Candace and Robert Hart of Tool, Texas, and Sharon and John Maddox of Ponca City, Okla.; a niece and her husband, Belinda and Arthur Mould of Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren and their spouses: Nancy and Gregory Hoag and their son and daughter, of Garland, Texas; Becky and Adam Purvis and their two sons of Boulder, Colo.; Kimber and Stephen Morrow and their two sons of Salisbury, Md.; Kristin and James Cheng and their two daughters and son of Norman, Okla.; Kenneth Chandler and Kinsey Maddox and their daughter of Warrensburg, Mo.; Art and Erin Mould and their two sons of Houston, Texas, and Shannon and Joe Flack of Wichita, Kan.; two brothers and their wives, Bill and Norma Crews of Tucker, Ga., and Jim and Hallie Crews of Pauls Valley, Okla., one sister-in-law, Barbara Lowe of Richardson, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Chandler was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Carl Frederick “Fritz” Chandler, her parents, two sisters and one brother. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in memory of Joy Crews Chandler to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, c/o John O’Dell, 3809 S. Boulevard, Edmond, OK, 73013.
