DR. LAVERN W. WESTFALL
1923 - 2011
Dr. Lavern W. Westfall, "L. W." was born December 5, 1923 and was embraced by his Heavenly Father on September 26, 2011.After graduating from Carney High School, he began college in Stillwater at age sixteen. College was interrupted when he was drafted into the Navy at the end of World War II. On returning from the war he married his lovely bride, Betty Jane Amrine and they were married sixty five years on May 18, 2011.Dr. Westfall received his degrees in accounting and business administration and his PHD in Education Administration from Oklahoma State University while being a school superintendent at Carney, Omega, and Temple, Oklahoma School Systems. He came to the Choctaw/Nicoma Park Schools in 1961 and remained until retiring in 1984; a total of thirty eight years in the teaching profession; thirty five as a school superintendent. The Choctaw/Nicoma Park School Board honored his twenty three years of exemplary guidance in the Choctaw/Nicoma Park School System by naming the "L.W. Westfall Elementary School" in his honor.Dr. Westfall was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nicoma Park since 1961. He was a Past Master for forty two years for Masonic Lodges in Carney, Temple, and Nicoma Park, Oklahoma. Early in his life he felt the call to be a minister, but he soon realized he was called to minister to children, which would become his life's work.He is preceded in death by his earthly mother and father, Stella Stephens Westfall and Ivy Almus Westfall. Also preceding him, his namesake daughter, Judith Lavern Westfall.Survivors include wife, Betty Jane Amrine Westfall of Nicoma Park; children, Linda Sue Holland of Norman; Carole Lynn Douglas of Oklahoma City; and Larry Wayne Westfall of Oklahoma City. Grandchildren include: Dr. Gregory D. Holland of Norman; Dr. Kristin K. Thorp of Oklahoma City; and Derek Francis of Norman. Great Grandchildren include: Liam Alexander Holland; Savannah Lynne Holland; and Ivy Lynn Thorp; other survivors include twin brother Leahn Westfall of Nicoma Park; brother Doyle Westfall of Midwest City; and sister Neva Alexander of Little Rock, Arkansas.The family wishes to thank the OU Medical Center, Valir Rehabilitation and Hospice Quality Care of Midwest City for the exceptional care and attention provided.Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Nicoma Park.Graveside services will follow at the Carney Cemetery.In lieu of flowers please donate to the American Cancer Society in his honor.
