A. C. WATKINS
1923 - 2010
A.C. Watkins, former Cushing resident, now of Owasso, passed away September 6, 2010 at the age of 86.
The son of the late Clarence Watkins and Pearl Chessmore Watkins, A.C. was born November 25, 1923 on the family farm southwest of Cushing.
He began his school career at Agra and graduated with the class of 1942.
He was united in marriage to Nadine Matthews on Sunday, November 7, 1943 at the First Baptist Church in Agra. They made their first home west of Cushing. They were blessed with two children, Judith Kay in 1946 and Jan Aaron in 1957.
A.C. was employed with the Cushing Grocery Company from 1946 to 1948 and Kinzie’s Dairy, from 1948 to 1955. In 1955 he opened Watkins’ DX Service Station on north Little in Cushing. Later in 1956, he went to work for Midland Cooperatives Refinery in Cushing, which later became the Hudson Refinery. He became employed in 1983 by Riffe Petroleum working in both Brownwood, Texas and Lancaster, Texas until 1986 when he returned to Cushing to assist Jan in the operation of Cushing Floral Gifts until the business was sold in 1993. He also was a long time, dedicated employee of the Davis Funeral Home.
In 2002 A. C. and Nadine sold their home and moved to the Baptist Village of Owasso.
A. C. enjoyed woodworking and simply doing odd jobs for anyone who needed him.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Owasso, and the Baptist Village SIRs Club. He was also a former member of the Cushing Lions Club.
Nadine preceded him in death on May 12, 2008 after almost 65 years of marriage.
In September 2000 their daughter Judy, succumbed to a lengthy battle with cancer. Five months later in February 2001, their grandson, Justin Brian Sanders was killed in a military maneuver off the coast of Florida. Then, in October 2005, their son-in-law O.M. “Bud” Sanders died.
A.C is survived by a son, Jan and his wife Elizabeth of Sammamish, Washington; one grandson, George Matthew Watkins, Seattle, Washington; and two granddaughters Greta Sanders Remington of Tulsa and Hayden Nadine Watkins of New York City, New York; a great grandson, Zachariah Kent Remington and great granddaughter Sierra Renee Remington, both of Tulsa; one sister, Addie Crane of Mounds; and three sisters-in law, Alene Matthews of Coweta; Ruthie Matthews of Austin, Texas; and Ann Watkins of Tulsa. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and long time friends, Paul and Alma Carpenter of Lakeland, Florida.
In addition to his wife, parents, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, A.C. was pre-deceased by two brothers, Norman and Ray Watkins and four sisters, Irene Hood, Pauline Pierce, Ethel Matthews and Freda Dawes.
Services will be Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Alsup Chapel, 7410 North 127th East Avenue Owasso, Oklahoma with Chaplain Jerry Baines officiating.
Funeral services in Cushing will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with Bryan King officiating.
Burial will follow in the Flynn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church Cushing Building Fund or to the Baptist Village Adam’s Fund.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Floyd Family Center.
