WILLIAM CARLTON MARTIN
1928 - 2007


William “Bill” Carlton Martin, a longtime Cushing resident, passed away on July 12, 2007 in the Cushing Regional Hospital at the age of 79 years.
The son of the late Leonard C. Martin and Verna C. Sumrall Martin, Bill was born on March 23, 1928 in Brinkman, Oklahoma.
He was reared and educated in Granite, Oklahoma, graduating from Ozark High School in Granite. After completing high school, Bill entered into the United States Air Force where he served from May 14, 1946 until May 13, 1949. While in the Air Force, Bill served in Japan as an auto mechanic.
After receiving his honorary discharge, Bill returned to Oklahoma where he was united in marriage to June Cowger on January 4, 1952 in Granite, Oklahoma. June passed away on November 30, 1996.
Bill had owned and operated the OK Radiator Shop, which was located on North Steele in Cushing from 1972 until 2003. In his spare time he enjoyed playing Skipbo, dominoes, and other card games. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing but most of all he enjoyed watching his grandchildren play ball and on numerous occasions he had made as many as four games in one night.
Bill will be remembered by all his coffee drinking buddies at the “Pink Palace” or otherwise known as the Homestead. His family will remember how he loved studying the Bible and how much he enjoyed having one on one Bible studies with his friend J. I. “Hardrock” Flynt.
Survivors include his three daughters, Gaye Jones and her husband Elmer; Becky Roe and her husband Buddy; and Sherri Hutchison and her husband Tony, all of Cushing; eight grandchildren, Christal Walters, Travis Jones, Trey Roe and his wife Autum, Martin Roe, William Jones, Rachel Wagnon and her husband J.C., Heath Hutchison, and J.I. Hutchison; one great-grandson, Beau Roe; one sister, Anna Murray and her husband John; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and his wife June, one brother, Eddie Martin and one sister, Alice Harville preceded Bill in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 16, 2007 in the Church of Christ located at 9th and Linwood in Cushing.
Burial will follow in the Flynn Cemetery, Cushing, Oklahoma.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Bill.
