H. J. Johnson passed to his maker at the age of 93 on February 10, 2015.He was in residence at the Norman Veterans Center in Norman, Oklahoma since November of 2014. Recent prior residences' include his son, Jay Michael Johnson of Norman and his son, David Alan Johnson of Wellston, Oklahoma.H. J. Johnson was born on December 8, 1921 in Byng, Oklahoma to his predeceased father, Hugh L. "Huey J." Johnson, Checotah I.T. and mother Bertha May Johnson-Dickey Paoli, I.T.He is survived by his sister, Alberta Johnson-Blackburn of Ada; son David and his wife Priscilla Johnson of Wellston; son Jay Michael Johnson of Norman; grandsons Keith Johnson of Edmond and Scott Johnson of Lexington; six grandchildren and Cousin Doyle Johnson of Ada.He was predeceased by his step mother, Beulah Johnson-Johnson; step-brother, Raymond Johnson; step-sister, Lucille Johnson; a half-brother, Donald Johnson; and a great granddaughter, Ashley Johnson.He graduated Byng High School in 1939 and began his college curriculum at Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, Oklahoma. His almost completed Bachelor of Science degree was halted following the events of December 7, 1941 wherein he began his professional military career at Officer's Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and in route to the West Coast and, eventually the Pacific Theatre, he married Geraldine Marquerite Roberts of Ada, Oklahoma in Kingman Arizona on June 16, 1944.Following their short honeymoon they remained apart until shortly after VJ Day. Before is embarkation he underwent amphibious training under the USMC in Southern California and joined with the 96th Division "The Dead Eyes." under Major General James L. Bradley. Following continued amphibious training in the Hawaiian Islands they were put on loan to General Douglas MacArthur to make the land assault on the Philippines during the "Battle of Leyte Gulf." Following next was the largest amphibious assault during the Pacific campaign, "The Battle of Okinawa" where he landed on Easter Sunday 1945 and was wounded.Returning from his duty he quickly completed his Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy at Oklahoma A&M and began teaching vocational agriculture on the Veterans Program in Lexington, Oklahoma.The family started with David Alan Johnson born on September 5, 1947 in Purcell, Oklahoma. During that time he was recommended to meet with V. C. Bratton, owner and founder of Gilt Edge Dairy in Norman, Oklahoma and took the position as procurement manager.He served as a Trustee in 1963 and a Deacon in 1967 at First Presbyterian in Norman.As a citizen soldier, a Captain in the 45th National Guard, he was called again to active duty during the Korean War and led a unit from Fort Sill, Oklahoma to Camp Baumholder, Germany assigned to the 2nd Armored division. The conflict ended and he returned again as a citizen soldier, his job intact at Gilt Edge, and the family increased with the birth of Jay Michael Johnson on August 8, 1957.The opportunity for a second career began with Economics Laboratories in 1972 which took the family to Dallas, Texas as District Manager for Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico until he retired and returned to Ada, Oklahoma.One of the great loves of his life was to remain inventive by making designs of ways and means to do simple life tasks. Many of designs were put to paper and often presented to his sons. Another love of his was to issue this familiar question to his children and grandchildren....If you had all the feathers you could carry, could you carry just one more?A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Lehman Funeral Home with interment following in the Wellston Cemetery.Arrangements are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home.
