MONSERRATE FERNANDEZ
1921 - 2011


Monserrate Lugo Fernandez, 90, a former Cushing resident, passed away on Monday, November 15, 2011 in Stillwater.
Monserrate was born on September 8, 1921 to Gregorio and Rosa Lugo in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico, one of fourteen children.
She and her family were ahead of their times and very independent. In fact, her sister was the first female licensed to drive in Puerto Rico.
Monserrate moved to New York in the 1940’s where she met and married the love of her life, Roberto Fernandez on September 1, 1948. They were married for 38 years until his passing.
She worked as a seamstress operator for many years.
She was a devoted mother to her two sons, and loved hosting parties and especially cooking for large family and employee dinners.
Monserrate was also a lifelong member of the Catholic Church.
In her spare time she enjoyed dancing and music.
Monserrate was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roberto and twelve brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her two sons, Jeff Fernandez and wife Diane of Tryon and Roberto Fernandez and wife Carol of Boston, Massachusetts; sister, Cristina Lugo of San Diego, California, grandchildren Sarah, Julia, Alejandro and Mercedes; and niece, Josephine Gussa and husband Herman of Wellston; as well as many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services have been entrusted to Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater and will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church {corner of Oak and Little} in Cushing with Father Matthew La Chance officiating.
Burial will follow at Carney Cemetery.
