PFC EDGAR DeWAYNE BELL
1947 - 1968


The son of a Randolph County native was killed in action on March 17. He was PFC Edgar DeWayne Bell, 21 year old son of Mrs. Odessa Bell and the late Edgar Bell of Tryon, Oklahoma. PFC Bell was killed during an enemy encounter while serving as a rifleman in Company A of the First Battalion of the 11th Infantry Brigade, 20th Infantry Division of the U. S. Army. His mother is the former Miss Odessa Rice of Oconee.
Bell was born January 18, 1947 near Tryon, and had lived there all his life. He was a graduate of Tryon High School, where he was active in FFA and also played on the high school basketball team. He entered the service in May, 1967 and completed training in Hawaii before going to Vietnam in December.
In addition to his mother, he is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Imogene Simpson of Sunray, Texas; Mrs. Kathleen Johnson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Mrs. Barbara Mobley of Perkins, Oklahoma; two brothers, Preston Bell of Carney, Oklahoma and Johnny Lee Bell of the home.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday at Carney Christian Union Church with Rev. H. I. Jones officiating. Interment was in Carney Cemetery under the direction of Fairly Funeral Home. A special military honor guard from Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, conducted graveside military services.
Those attending the funeral from here were his uncle, Homer Rice and wife, Edd Rice of Dalton, Mrs. Vada Hogue of Oconee, Mrs. Mae King of Pocahontas and Mrs. Lena Bell of the Dalton Route, Mr. and Mrs. Arvil Bell and daughter, Betty, of Cold Water, Michigan; also attended the funeral. Seth Michael Rice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edd Rice, who was also in Vietnam, accompanied the body of his cousin home for the funeral.
