Melvin Curtis Gilliam of Carney was born at Wellston, Oklahoma, July 23, 1937, to Otis and Gladys (Wiley) Gilliam. He left this earth and passed to his heavenly home January 26, 2017, at the age of 80 years.
Melvin attended Happy Valley School, and the remainder of his school years he attended Wellston, where he graduated in 1955. Melvin helped his father deliver milk to area residents while at home. On November 27, 1960, he married Victoria Hackworth, they lived a short time in Oklahoma City they then moved to Wellston where he worked at Ralstons Feed Store, he later got a job at Oklahoma State University as a painter, he then transferred to the OSU post office and he and Vickie moved to Carney. Melvin served in the Oklahoma National Guard for six years. In 1966, Melvin and Vickie moved to Baker, Oklahoma, where they lived and worked on a farm and cattle ranch until 1970, moving back to Carney and permanently settling there. Melvin went to work for the Oklahoma Publishing Company as a pressman, he retired in 2004 having worked 33 1/2 years. After his retirement he mowed lawns and did honey-do-jobs around Carney for many years.
Melvin loved his Lord and Savior, and together he and Vickie joined the Tryon Assembly of God Church and enjoyed working in whatever needed to be done. They mowed the church lawn, he on one side and Vickie on the other and they would mow till they meet in the middle. He loved his church, family, and friends, he always tried to be of help when called on.
His parents, Otis and Gladys Gilliam; one brother, Lawrence; and one sister, Geraldine preceded Melvin in death.
Survivors include his wife, Vickie of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie and Terri Gilliam of Chandler; sister-in-law, Margie Gilliam of Wellston; his pets Jessie, Daisy, and King' other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at the Tryon Assembly of God Church, with Rev. Gene Herndon and Rev. Lorn Starling officiating. Burial will follow at Carney Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Chandler, Oklahoma.
