Cornelius Junior Ray Sam of Red Oak, Oklahoma died Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the VA Medical Center, Muskogee, OK at the age of 89.

Cornelius was born May 7, 1925 in LeFlore, OK to James Morris and Josephine (Thompson) Sam. He attended school in LeFlore and enjoyed playing baseball for the High School team. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 16. He served during WWII and the Korean War. He married Norma Carney on March 12, 1954 in Van Buren, Arkansas. Cornelius worked at the L.A. Brush Manufacturing Company in California until his retirement in 1990. He was an ordained deacon for the Haggai Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA. In November of 1991, Cornelius and his wife, Norma moved back to Red Oak. He was a member of the South Rock Creek Baptist Church. Cornelius loved working on cars. He never met a stray dog he didn't like and he was always willing to go the extra mile to help someone out. He enjoyed gospel singing.

Cornelius is survived by his wife, Norma Sam of the home; children, Paul Sam of Midwest City, John William Gaines and wife, Jeanette of Garden Grove, CA, Carlos Ray Sam and wife, Elaine of Bengal, Debra Dawes and husband, Steve of Weatherford, Merle Dee Sam of the home, Della Mae Querubin and husband, Rolando of Red Oak, Morris James Sam of Hartshorne, Rebecca Pruter and husband, Chad of Wilburton, Theresa Ann Sam of Lemoore, CA, Matthew Allen Sam and wife, Janet of Wilburton, Mark Albert Sam and wife, Christina of Krebs, Carla Jeanne Enriquez and husband, Daniel of Norwalk, CA; Twenty Nine Grandchildren; Twenty Great Grandchildren; brothers, Marvin Sam of McAlester and Virgil Sam of Albion; special friends, Rose Simon and Family of CA and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Josephine Sam; son, Cephas Sam; grandchildren, Nicole Marie Sam, Jeremy Dodson, and Cephas Joel; brothers, Louie G. Sam, Clifford Sam, Jimmy Sam, Mario Sam; sisters, Vivian Della Sam, Josey Mae Sam and Geraldine James.

The Funeral Service will be held Monday, May 12, 2014 at Cedar Baptist Church with Rev. William Frye officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedar Cemetery, Red Oak, Oklahoma.

Pallbearers will be his sons, John William Gaines, Carlos Ray Sam, Merle Dee Sam, Morris James Sam, Matthew Allen Sam and Mark Albert Sam. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons, great grandsons and Marvin Simon. 

Arrangements entrusted to Jones Harkins Funeral Home, Wilburton, OK.
