Reta Pauline Garrett, age 93, of Mangum, passed away Tuesday morning, November 22, 2011, at her residence, in Mangum.
Mrs. Garrett was born on August 17, 1918, in Hollis, Oklahoma to Clarence Melvin and Vera Edna (Keeton) Tyson. During her younger years, her dad was involved in farming and the family lived in several different locations. In the mid 1920's, they moved to Lone Wolf, Oklahoma where Reta graduated from high school. After graduation, Reta moved to Oklahoma City, where she received her nursing degree. Leaving Oklahoma City, shortly after graduation, Mrs. Garrett began a career in nursing that lasted into her seventies. She began working at the Granite Hospital and worked for several doctors in Granite and later worked at the Mangum Hospital, serving as a surgical nurse and later as the director of nursing. After leaving the hospital, she served as a nurse for many doctors who had clinics in Mangum. On May 31, 1952, she married the love of her life, Ben Lee Garrett, in Clovis, New Mexico and he preceded her in death on September 9, 1997. A longtime member of the Church of Christ, Reta was a devoted Christian woman who served others and enjoyed her chosen vocation. Besides the career that she loved, she enjoyed playing "eighty-four dominoes", "forty-two dominoes" and being with her friends and family.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three brothers, Olan Tyson, Lee Tyson and Lewis Tyson, she is survived by three nieces, Lee Ann Tyson of Yukon, Sharon Greer of Altus and Pam Rhoades of Oklahoma City; three nephews, Gary Tyson of Hobart, Mike Tyson of Thomas and Don Tyson of Ft. Cobb along with many other family members and friends.
Funeral services for Reta Garrett will be at 2 p.m., Monday, November 28, 2011, at the Mangum Church of Christ with Todd McRay and Lowell Kirby officiating. Interment will follow at the Lone Wolf Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
