Crescent, OK
(permission granted)

Margaret Alice Irby Norwood was Born on June 19, 1918 to Birda Mae Irby and Hannibal Garett Irby, in the Zion Community near Crescent Oklahoma. She departed this world on April 7, 2021.

By the grace of God she had a long life of 102 years.

She was a strong woman that faced many obstacles on her journey. Margaret was born in 1918 during the H1N1 (flu) pandemic; her mother died shortly thereafter. She was lovingly raised by her mothers sister, Francis Capers.

The next positive change in her life was the marriage at an early age to Wiley Norwood, the love of her life. The Norwood family was large and very supportive. She always talked about how her mother-in-law (Mama Mattie) treated her as though she was one of her children. She use to say how Mama Mattie told her she was too frail for fieldwork so she taught her to help cook for the family. Wiley and Margaret raised three daughters, Barbara, Birda, Edith and a special daughter Faye and one son, Wayne. To many people she was known as Granny. Her Legacy spans over 6 generations of grandchildren, with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. During her free time Granny would love to read books, canning preserves from her farm, gardening, and preserving the family history. She was a Historian. Granny loved to go fishing. She would use a bamboo pole as a fishing rod and still would catch the biggest catfish. Her garden was always in bloom with flowers and honeysuckle. She also liked to collect turtles, quilting, and embroidery. She was very crafty. Granny enjoyed her family and singing praises to the Lord. One of her favorite songs to sing was “This Little Light of Mine”. One of her proudest accomplishments was receiving a letter from President Barak Obama. Every night before bed she would read Pslams 23, and she kept and shared those words in her heart with everyone she knew.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Ora Irby and Vinita Owens, Brothers Leonard Davidson, Forrest Irby, William “Bill” Irby, daughters Barbara James and Birda Mae Bufford.

She is survived by her daughter Edith Jones (Warren Singer), special daughter Faye Piggee (Troy), and Son Wayne Norwood (Roberta).

We cannot express the love and support rendered by the children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends.

God gave Granny the grace and mercy, and family gave her the love to cherish life and survive 102 years despite many trials and tribulations.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday, April 16, 2021 at the First Baptist Church in Crescent.

Burial will follow in the Zion Cemetery.
