Sarah Bernice (Garten) Gorrell, 95, was born near Everest, Kansas October 13,
1897. She moved with her family to the Piedmont, Oklahoma community in 1905 and
later to a farm near College Corner school in the Hennessey community in 1911.
She grew up attending the Union Chapel Church and was a member of this church
most of her life. She taught school in local one-room schools and in the
Hennessey school system, but most of her life she was a farm wife and mother.
She married Luke Everton Gorrell on June 3, 1923.
She gave birth to twin boys, rearing one to be an adult. They lived on farms
Northeast, East and Southeast of Hennessey, living on a farm Southeast of
Hennessey from 1945 to 1969 when she and her husband moved to the town of
Hennessey.
She remained there until December 1984 when following her husband's death she
moved to Edmond, Oklahoma to live near her son. She spent the last year of her
life in the Amberwood Nursing Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
She died Friday, Feb. 5, 1993.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father,
stepmother, husband, one son, two brothers, and a sister-in-law.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John S. and Dena Gorrell;
Grandchildren: Deanne and husband Christopher Steinmetz, and James Everton
Gorrell; four great-grandchildren; Heather & Lindsey Steinmetz and Taylor &
James L. Gorrell; two sisters: Grace and Alma Garten; three sisters-in-law: Faye
Garten, Ruth Goetzinger and Dorothy Gorrell; several nieces and nephews;
friends and loved ones.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 9, 1993 at 2:00 p.m. in the
Union Chapel Church, with Rev. Joe Stubbs of Enid officiating. Arrangements made
by Cordry & Sons.
