Celebration of Life Service for Jack A. Funderburg is 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2018, at the Hennessey High School Auditorium with the Rev. Jimmy Berkenbile officiating.


There will be a private interment prior to the service.

Visitation with the family is 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday December 9, 2018, Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home.

Jack was born February 8, 1926, in Wilburton to Rhoda Catherine and John Henry Funderburg, and went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, December 4, 2018. His daughter and son-in-law were by his side, as were loving caretakers.

Jack was the seventh child in his family of ten. Though the large family struggled with making ends meet during the Great Depression, Jack's childhood was a happy one with his loving family and many close friends.

Jack graduated from Wilburton High School in May of 1944, where he participated in football, basketball and baseball. He served as captain of his football team during his senior year, but his favorite sport was always baseball.

On April 6, 1946, Jack married his high school sweetheart, Betty Brinkley. They became the proud parents of two daughters, Jacqueline "Jackie" and Patricia "Patty."

After their marriage in 1946, Jack ran for and was elected to the office of Latimer County Tax Assessor. During his first term in office he became a member of the National Guard 143rd Engineer Treadway Bridge Company in Wilburton and was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict. He served in Germany as a staff sergeant and combat engineer, based in Wisconsin and Germany.

Upon his return to the states, Jack once again took over the office of County Assessor, which had been filled by his wife, Betty, during his military service.

Jack attended Eastern Oklahoma Junior College, Wilburton and Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Ada. He earned his Master's in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, and his administrator's certificate from Oklahoma State University.

In 1955, Jack took his first coaching and teaching position in Lacy. There he taught science and history, and coached basketball and baseball from 1955-1958.

In the fall of 1958, Jack came to Hennessey as head basketball and baseball coach and assistant football coach and history teacher from 1958-1962. He, along with Coach Bill Rhodes, took the 1960 and 1962 football teams all the way to state. They were state runners up both years, and it was an accomplishment which brought Jack fond memories and pride.

In 1963, Jack was named Hennessey Grade School Principal. He acted as the grade school principal from 1963-1970; as Hennessey Middle School Principal from 1970-74; and completed his career as Hennessey High School Principal from 1974-1987.

During Jack's career in education he served as President of the Kingfisher County Educators Association. He received the Top Administrator Award for Oklahoma's Northwest District in 1984. He was elected to the Hennessey High School Hall of Fame in 1999, and received the high honor of having Hennessey's baseball field named "Funderburg Field" in 2003.

Jack and his wife Betty have been members of Union Chapel Church for 60 years. They served as Sunday school teachers, Third Elder and Treasurer. For the past year, Jack attended Hennessey First Christian Church.


Jack is survived by his loving wife, Betty; devoted daughter, Patty and husband Bill Lovell of Enid; grandson Chris and wife Stacey Maxon of Norman; great-grandsons, Brennan and Brant Maxon, and John Barry of Norman; great-granddaughter Katie Barry of Norman; brother Stanley Funderburg of Oklahoma City; sister Norma Jean and husband Kenneth Major of McAlister, and sisters-in-law Lois Langham of Tulsa and Lorene Maddox and husband Rufus of Bethany. In addition, Jack is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.


Jack will be remembered as a man who loved his Lord, his family, life, friends, good times and laughs and always, his students. Jack and Betty celebrated 72 blessed years of marriage in April, and he always joked that if Betty ever left him, he'd pack his suitcase and follow right behind her.

He was extremely proud of the fact that he and all seven of his brothers served our country in the military.

Jack loved all things Hennessey, sports, and fishing and hunting. He cherished his life, career and friendships in Hennessey and all his fond memories associated with it.


Greeting Jack in heaven will be his Savior Jesus Christ, his mother and father, one sister, six brothers; daughter, Jackie and son-in-law, Tommy, along with numerous loving family members and friends.
 

Bill and Patty want to give special thanks and recognition to Doris Schulz, longtime friend of the family and caretaker for Jack and Betty; Jack's numerous supportive and loyal friends; the entire staff of Hennessey Nursing and Rehabilitation, and everyone in the community who so loved and cherished him.
 

Donations in his honor may be made to the Hennessey Athletics/Activity fund, or the Alzheimer's Association, with Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home, 500 S. Main Street, Hennessey, OK 73742, acting as custodian of funds.
