Funeral Services for Mrs. Eva Felt Held Here on
Sunday
Funeral services for Mrs. Eva Felt, whose death
occurred at Lawton, Oklahoma, Wednesday, January 22, were held
Friday afternoon at 2:30 from the Christian church. Rev.
McDowell, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Enid, officiated
at the services. Numerous old friends, many from out – of – the
– city, attended. Two selections by a mixed quartet composed of
Mrs. A. H. Lee, Mrs. A. M. Carmer, Mr. James W. Blye and Mr.
Russell Dunlap – "Heaven Is My Home", and "There'll Be No Night
There" – with violin and piano accompaniment by Mrs. James W.
Blye and Mrs. Bryan Gundlach, added impressiveness to the
service.
The pall was born by Doctor C. O. Goes, Mr. George A. Clark, Mr.
S. A. Snyder, Mr. R. M. Brittain, Mr. Charles K. Stettler and
Mr. B. C. Morrow. Honorary pallbearers were Mr. Fred Ehler, Mr.
John M. Jones, Mr. A. J. Clymans, Mr. Joseph Sternberger, Mr. L.
A. Ferrell, and Mr. W. D. Cupps.
Interment was made beside her deceased husband in the Hennessey
Cemetery.

A Kingfisher County Pioneer
Passes Away
Jabez A. Felt of Hennessey, and
one of the best-known men in the County, passed
away Tuesday, August 17, 1915, after an illness
extending over several weeks. For the past two
weeks he apparently was rapidly on the road to
recovery, but was taken suddenly worse on Monday
night and died the following morning shortly
before noon.
Jabez A, Felt was born August 24, 1850, at Mt.
Vernon, Ohio. In 1860 to his parents moved to
Blairstown, Iowa, where he received the greater
part of his education, graduating from
Blairstown Academy in 1871. He then moved to
Kansas with the early pioneers and located at
Minneapolis, Kansas, where he was married to
Miss Eva Richardson on January 16, 1874.
Mr. Felt has always taken an
active part in politics and served two terms as
register of deeds of Ottawa County, Kansas.
He moved to Hennessey in 1893 and was engaged
for five years in the furniture and undertaking
business with Charles Binding. On January 1,
1898, he was appointed postmaster at Hennessey
by President McKinley, and serve the public in
that capacity for nearly 17 years, or until
November 30, 1914. Through Mr. Felt's efforts,
while postmaster, the first rural route in
Oklahoma was established at Hennessey in August,
1900. He also served the public as a member of
the school board for 11 years at the time of his
death was a member of the board of trustees of
the city.
Deceased was a member of Coronado
Lodge No. 56, A. F. & A. M., and Hennessey
Chapter No. 37, O. E. S. He was also an active
and consistent member of the Congregational
church and had served as chairman of the board
of trustees.
He was a man of generous impulses and one of the
sturdy pioneers who helped to build the great
state of Oklahoma.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 Thursday
afternoon at the Congregational church in
Hennessey, conducted by Rev. C. G. Murphy of
Oklahoma City. Only a small portion of the
several hundred people who attended the funeral
could gain admission to the church, the overflow
finding seats on the benches on the church lawn.
The Masonic Lodge at Hennessey, assisted by
Masons from Kingfisher, Dover and Kiel, had
charge of the service at the grave. The members
of the Eastern Star also attended the funeral in
a body.
Besides a devoted wife, he leaves
two sons and two daughters, all of whom were
present at the funeral, Ollie G. Felt and Mrs.
Fred Sponsler of Lawton, Miss Flora Felt and
Floyd E. Felt of Hennessey.
Those attending the funeral from neighboring
towns were: Judge J. B. Cullison and Judge J. C.
Roberts of Enid; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brittain,
of Waukomis; M. M. Tate of Oklahoma City; Mr.
and Mrs. Schowalter, Mrs. Sarah Liston, George
H. Laing, F. D. Daykin, William G. Newer, J. A.
Banker, Clem Thorne, S. F. Robinson, W. C. Brown
and Ed Ingram of Kingfisher; E. V. Welch, Gus
Ruth, Warren Colton and G. S. Van Gundy of
Dover; and Mr. and Mrs. Milton Duffy of Kiel.
