A memorial service will be 2 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at First United Methodist Church, Hennessey, under the direction of Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home. Rev. Robyn Goggs will officiate.
Margaret was born in Cardiff, South Wales, Sept. 21, 1923, to John and Ethel Bevan. She was an only child. She graduated with honors in French and English in 1944 from Bristol University in Bristol, England. Margaret met Roy Bennett, an American soldier stationed in Cambridge in June 1944 and married him on March 8, 1945. She traveled for two weeks by ship and train and arrived in Hennessey, Okla., on Feb 26, 1946, with their first child in tow. Roy and Margaret raised three children on the Bennett family farm. Margaret was a homemaker and began working as a seamstress for many people around town. She stopped sewing professionally after her son Kevin was killed in August 1971 but kept it as a hobby. In 1982, she began working at Hennessey Town Clerk’s Office. She attended Autry Vo-Tech in Enid for two semesters while working for the town. For a few months in 1995, she was the Hennessey town clerk prior to her retirement in April 1995. Margaret was a competitive bowler for many years. She also learned to quilt in a quilting group in Hennessey. She was active at Hennessey Senior Citizens Center and a member of First United Methodist Church, Hennessey.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy Bennett; and two sons, John Michael and Kevin Roy.
