Thomas Jefferson Murphy, son of John and Matilda Perry Murphy was born Sept. 16, 1840 at Decatur, Ind. and departed this life early Thursday morning, July 16, 1936 at the home of his son, R.O. Murphy, in Hennessey, at the age of 95 years, 10 Mo.
 
His father , John Murphy was a contractor and aided in the construction of some of the early railroads in the midwest, and thus as a boy Thomas was privileged to experience the pioneer life as his parents and others who aided in the development of several mid-western states. As a youth he traveled with his parents and a group of persons who sought to establish a town where the city of Des Moines, Iowa now stands. Afterwards going to Illinois , where he grew to manhood. He learned a trade , which he followed until he moved to Louisiana, Pike Co. MO.
 
He joined the Union Army during the Civil War and was injured shortly after while building a fort and was discharged after a few weeks service.
 
He was married to Maria Glover on Aug. 18, 1869. Eight children were born to this union. He moved with his family to Oklahoma in 1889 and homesteaded a quarter section of land s/w of Hennessey, Kingfisher Co. Ok, which he still owned at the time of his death.
From Family information: Thomas Jefferson Murphy came to Ok Territory a few days before the opening and camped at Buffalo Springs in the Cherokee Strip. On April 22, 1889 he made the run and homesteaded the n\e quarter of 17-8-7. Several family members came with him, It took three weeks for fourteen family members to come by covered wagon from Pike Co. MO. Nephews, Alonzo B. Goodpasture and Madison Lenard Goodpasture came with them.
