Alvin Cornwell Dies at Enid
A telephone message from Enid, summoning John Cornwell to the bedside of his father, who had been visiting relatives at Joplin, Mo., and while enroute home had stopped off to visit a few days with his daughter, Mrs. Wood, of Enid was received Saturday morning. John left immediately for Enid. Monday another telephone message was received by Dewey Cornwell to come at once as his father was unconscious and would likely pass away at any time. Mrs. J. L. Crum and Dewey and Ethel Cornwell left for Enid Monday afternoon but before they reached their destination Mr. Cornwell had passed away.
Mr. Cornwell has been a citizen of this vicinity for a number of years, coming here from Sumner County, Kansas. He owned one of the good farms in the Cottonwood Valley and with his family made that his home since coming to this state. His wife died at their home here about seven years ago. Two of his boys served in the army during the world's war. John, the second son, was released from the army several months ago and was at the bedside of his father when the end came. Tom, the eldest son is in a camp somewhere in the states, but relatives have been unable to find him to inform him of his father's death.
Mr. Cornwell was an active worker in the Masonic Lodge, was a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory at Guthrie. He was also a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge.
He was an active worker in the recent war campaigns, taking an active interest in Liberty loan, Red Cross, and War Work campaigns. He was also registrar for Spring Creek township.
His body, accompanied by his son, John Cornwell, and daughter, Mrs. Wood, and other relatives was brought to Cashion Thursday and laid in state at the A. F. & A. M. lodge room.
Midnight funeral services were conducted by the Scotish Rite Masons at the Christian Church at 12 o'clock, midnight, Wednesday, and the body will be placed beside that of his wife this afternoon in the Cashion Cemetery.
Out of town relatives present at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Ed Walton, Wichita, Kans., Mr. and Mrs. Perry Craig, Oklahoma City, Okla; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Cornwell, Mamie, Roy, Neil and Edward Cornwell, all of Yukon, Okla.

Alvin Cornwell was born in Dewitt County, Illinois April 29, 1865. Died June 9, 1919. He moved with his parents to Belle Plaine, Kans. in the year of 1880. He was married to Rachel Shay in 1889, who preceded him to the Great Beyond in August 1912. Born to this union five children: Ethel, who resides at home; Thomas, now in the service of his country; John, just returned from England; Mrs. Nellie Wood of Enid; and Dewey, who has been living at home.
Besides the children he leaves to mourn their loss three brothers and one sister: Steven Cornwell, Yukon, Okla., James, Cornwell, Ponca City, Okla. Elmer Cornwell, Joplin, Mo., and Mrs. J. E. Morris, Pekin, Ill., and one grandchild, Maxine Wood.
He was a member of the Consistory at Guthrie, of the I. O. O. F., Eastern Star and Rebekas.
