Norma Lea Ascue, age 91, longtime Tonkawa resident, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 in Enid, OK.
A memorial ceremony to celebrate her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2018 in the Chapel at Trout Funeral Home Cremation Service of Tonkawa with Chaplain Tom Howard officiating. Following the ceremony, she will be laid to rest next to her husband Dwayne at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Tonkawa.
Norma Lea was born on June 20, 1926 to Elden H. Bonnett and Hazel M. Benson Bonnett in Enid, OK. She was raised in Hunter, OK and graduated from Hunter High School. On June 30, 1946 Norma Lea married Dwayne Ascue at the Christian Church in Hunter. They lived in the Hunter area after they were married before moving to Tonkawa in the early 1960's to manage the Starlite Lounge, Steakhouse and Bowling Alley. Sometime later, she began working at the Safeway in Tonkawa in the Meat department. Then, she and Dwayne ran the Dairy Boy restaurant in Tonkawa. As time continued, Norma Lea took to sewing and began selling custom drapery. Many area homes were decorated beautifully by her creations. While Norma Lea eventually retired from working, she never stopped serving and helping others. She remained active in the Tonkawa Chamber of Commerce, The Tonkawa Historical Society, The Red Hat Society, The Tonkawa Depot, and served at the voting polls for many years. Norma Lea's willingness to give of herself to others spurred on and supported many people and events in Tonkawa. When she wasn't busy helping around the community, Norma Lea enjoyed sewing, gardening and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her children: Linda Williams and husband David of Tonkawa, OK, Joyce Campos and husband David of Mesquite, TX, and Chris Ascue of Tonkawa, OK, Grandchildren Ty Williams and wife Natalie, Travis Williams, Amiee Mancin and husband Craig, Heather Goff, 6 great grandchildren: Kayla and Kambrey Williams, Aubrey and Logan Goff as well as Tess and Emma Mancin.
Norma Lea was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Stanley Bonnett and Melvin Bonnett, as well as her husband Dwayne.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tonkawa Historical Society, 220 E. Grand Ave., Tonkawa, OK 74653.
Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Tonkawa.
