David Bolton Burrows, longtime resident of Ponca City, died Monday, July 31, 2006, at Ponca City Medical Center. He was 89. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, August 3, in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tom Schacher officiating. A private burial will be held at 11 a.m. in Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery. Trout Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
David Bolton Burrows was born Oct. 3, 1916, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Dr. James Austin and Martha Gertrude Bolton Burrows. He attended grade school in Ames, Iowa, and Grand Rapids, N.D., and junior and senior high school in Stillwater. He attended Oklahoma State University (then Oklahoma A&M) where he received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1939. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at OSU.He was an Eagle Scout and served six years with the Oklahoma National Guard.
On April 12, 1941, Dave and Ruth Raulston Speaker were married in Tulsa. After graduation, Dave was employed as a research engineer with Stanolind Oil and Gas Company in Tulsa until he joined Continental Oil Company in October of 1948 in Ponca City While with Conoco, he served as research engineer group leader, manager of Research Services of Research and Development Department and manager of Administrative Services. Before he retired in January 1984, he was the construction project manager for Research and Development West and saw it to completion. David was active in the community and with the Oklahoma State University Alumni. He was a member of Noon Lions Club since 1960, having served as president; OSU Alumni Association since 1939 and served as national president in 1973-74; president of the OSU Dad’s Association; president of Ponca City Quarterback Club; board member of Ponca City chapter of American Red Cross and chairman of the blood drive for several years; board member of Conoco Credit Union; and board member of the YMCA as captain of the building drive. He was also a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
David was inducted into the Oklahoma State University Alumni Hall of Fame and the Ponca City Quarterback Club Hall of Fame. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church family where he had served as deacon, trustee and elder and was a member of the Disciple’s Sunday school class and Pastor Tom’s Bible study group. He enjoyed playing golf and tennis and was an avid sports fan, especially all OSU sports.
David is survived by his wife, Ruth Speaker Burrows; three children, Susan Peeples and husband Gerald of North Little Rock, Ark., David Steven Burrows and wife Virginia of Kingwood, Texas, and Sally Hodges of Ponca City; a brother, Robert “Bob” Gordon Burrows and wife Jean of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Peeples and wife Debby of Bowling Green, Ky., Lisa Peeples Collier and husband Mike of Collierville, Tenn., Kimberly Burrows Lawson and husband Victor of Kingwood, Texas, Keri Jean Burrows of Kingwood, Texas, Heather Hodges Roberts and husband Colin of Plano, Texas, and David Thomas Hodges and wife Shannon of Indio, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren, Zackary Carlos Collier, Tyler Michael Collier, Olivia Nicole Collier, Madisyn Gabrielle Peeples, Wesley David Lawson and Jack David Roberts.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Austin Burrows Jr.
Honorary bearers will be Mike Ellis, Jim Trout, Ernest M. Trout, Jim Fuller, Curtis Bradley, Russell Allen and members of Noon Lions Club.

Ruth Raulston Speaker Burrows, age 97, long time resident of Ponca City, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, September 25, 2017 in Ponca City.
The family has requested no public viewing. A graveside ceremony to celebrate her life will be held at 3:30 pm, Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Resthaven Memorial Park with Pastor Robert Montgomery officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.
Ruth was born on August 11, 1920 to Elmer Speaker and Florence Fleischer Speaker in McAlester, OK. While she was young, her family moved to Louisiana for her father's job. Shortly after their arrival, he passed away, so her mother moved to Tulsa where they lived during Ruth's education. In 1938, Ruth graduated from Tulsa Central High School. Following high school, she attended Oklahoma State University joining the Chi Omega sorority. After college, Ruth returned to Tulsa where she met David B. Burrows. They were married in Tulsa on April 12, 1941, residing there until David was hired at Conoco in 1949, moving the family to Ponca City. Throughout the years, Ruth and David were faithful members of First Presbyterian Church. Ruth loved getting her hands dirty in the garden. Her home on Lake Ponca had terraces she and David spent much time and effort landscaping, as well, Ruth took care of the flowers in the courtyard at First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her children Susan Peeples and husband Gerald of Bowling Green, KY, David S. Burrows of Kingwood, TX; grandchildren: Jeffrey Peeples and wife Debby of Bowling Green, KY, Lisa Collier and husband Mike of Collierville, TN, Kimberley Lawson and husband Victor of Kingwood, TX, Keri Burrows of Kingwood, TX, David Hodges and wife Shannon of Temecula, CA, and Heather Roberts and husband Colin of Plano, TX, as well as ten great grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Dottie Edmister, and daughter Sally Ellis.
