Trula Burdette (Roye) Smith

Trula Burdette Roye Smith, resident of White Eagle, passed Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Ponca City Medical Center. She was 65 years of age. Trula was a Ponca Tribal member, Yellow Berry descendent belonging to the Deer Clan. She carried the Indian name of “MaZi-Wah” which translated means “Little Woman”. 

She was born April 6, 1948 in Pawnee, Oklahoma, the daughter of Thurston Paige Roye and Doris E. (Calls Him) Roye. She was a graduate of the Chilocco Indian School. She was a member of the Ponca Indian United Methodist Church. Her enjoyments were her family, playing bingo, visiting the casinos, bead work, taking photographs and cooking. 

She is survived by her three children, Barbara Smith of Enid, Oklahoma, Clu Campbell of Dallas, Texas, and Amelia Smith of Lake Andes, South Dakota; 2 brothers, Burgess Roye of Ponca City and Beaumont Roye of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; many other extended family and friends. 

Trula was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Vivian Smith; 4 brothers, Paladine Roye, Marland Roye, Calls Him Roye and Overwater Roye; 3 sisters, Toya Snyoground, Tray Snyoground and Beaulah Hodges. 

Prayer services will be held Sunday, October 27, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Ponca Indian United Methodist Church. A noon meal will be served on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the church followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. with Bro. Jimmy White presiding. Burial will follow in the Ponca Tribal Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. 

Casket bearers are Scott Smith, Clu Campbell, Beaumont Roye, Burgess Roye, Kip Spotted Eagle and George Parry. Honorary casket bearers are Jake Rodriguez, George White Plum, Anthony Mendoza and Robert Cole.
