Leland Pappan Jr., resident of White Eagle, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was 61.
Leland was born August 1, 1947 in Pawnee, Oklahoma, the son of Leland Pappan Sr. and Bessie Others Pappan. He was a 1965 graduate of Ponca City High School. He entered the United States Army in September of 1965. Leland served in the Army as a paratrooper, training in Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Fort Bragg, South Carolina. He then served a tour of duty in Vietnam where he was wounded in action and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Leland was married to Norene Crazy Bear in 1968. He was a deacon in the Ponca Indian Baptist Church and was most recently the Director of the Social Development Center of the Ponca Tribe. He served as the Ponca Tribal Chairman from 1983-1985. Leland enjoyed playing golf, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Norene, of the home; his children, Clinton Pappan, Ponca City, Leland Pappan III, Anthony Pappan, Quinton Pappan and Richard Pappan, all of White Eagle, Mildred Montanez, Ponca City, Molly and Randy Kemble, Ponca City, Millicent and Javier Higine, Oklahoma City, Leann Pappan, White Eagle, Pawnee Moore, Ponca City, Crystal Rios and family, Oklahoma City, and Mercedes Pappan, Ponca City; his brothers and sisters, Molly Elizabeth Pappan Eagle, Garland Pappan, Thomas Pappan and Lillian Pappan Eagle, all of Ponca City; grandchildren, Gerald Jr., Jalen, Patrick, Rhain, Nemaceo, Triston, Veronica, Jailen, Randi, Vaughn, Zachary, Javier, Randall, Angel, Vanessa and Cruz; one great grandson, Gerald Lee Pappan III; numerous other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Bessie Pappan; one son, Gerald Lee Pappan; one grandson, Carlos DeLariva; one brother, Amarbe Pappan Sr..
Leland was dearly loved by his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and all other extended family and will be deeply missed.
Prayer services will be held each evening at 7 p.m. at the Ponca Indian Baptist Church. A noon meal will be served on Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Church followed by the funeral at 2 pm. Leland's adopted brother, Richard Pickup will conduct the service assisted by Bro. Paul Graham and Doug Eagle. Burial will be in the Ponca Tribal Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
