Edward Swygert, longtime Ponca City resident, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 8, 2008. He was 88 years old. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children and grandchildren. His grandchildren had several special names for him from; Dee Dee, Big Daddy, Pops, to PaPa, he was very much loved.
Edward was born in Welsar Bayou, Arkansas to Willie and Elsie Swygert on January 9, 1920. He grew up in Arkansas. He later worked on the R.A. Pickens Ranch and Bob Stimpson Ranch as a horse trainer. Ed had a love for horses and traveled to many rodeos. From a previous marriage he had three sons, Edward Swygert Jr., of Bastrop, Louisiana, David Swygert of Fort Myers, Florida, and Laverne Swygert of Chicago, Illinois. Two daughters, Monzella Dorsey and husband, Rudy of Bastrop, Louisiana and Rosetta Davis and husband, Willie, of Fort Myers, Florida. On February 28, 1949, in Dumas, Arkansas, he married Juanita Bell. To this union there were four children, Jessie Shields and husband, Joe, Ora Jackson and husband, Curtis, both of Ponca City, Coy Swygert and wife, Jackie, of Victoria, Texas and Willie Swygert of Dallas, Texas. In 1968 they moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma where he was a cook and a very good one at that. The couple moved to Ponca City in 1973 where he worked at the Cookson Ranch as a horse trainer. He was the best husband, dad, and grandfather you could have.
He is survived by his wife, children and two sisters, Carrie Lee Livingston and Willie Mae of Detroit, Michigan, one brother, Allen Swygert, of Chicago, Illinois, 54 grandchildren, 83 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Roscoe Swygert and Y.C. Swygert, and two grandchildren, Abraham Swygert and Quinecia Swygert.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2008 at the Victory Worship Center, 618 East Hartford, with Elder Sylvester Alexander and Pastor Rick Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.

Juanita Swygert aka “Big Mama” passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2020 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. She was 96 years old and truly blessed over the years. Juanita was born on February 12, 1924 in McGehee, Arkansas to Josh and Laura Martin Bell.
Juanita was raised in Pickens, Arkansas. She married Edward Swygert in Dumas, Arkansas on February 28, 1949 and to this union there were four children; Jessie Shields, Ora Jackson and husband Curtis, of Ponca City, OK, Coy Swygert and wife Jackie of Victoria, TX and Willie Swygert and wife Cynthia of Dallas, TX. Also stepchildren; Edward Swygert, Jr, David Swygert, Laverne Swygert, Monzella Dorsey and Rosetta Davis. The family moved from Dumas, AR to Muskogee, OK in 1968 and later to Ponca City, OK in 1973 and remained here until her passing.
Juanita worked as a cook for many years. She also loved cooking for her family, so we could always get a good home cooked made from scratch Sunday dinner after church. “Big Mama” as she was affectionately known will be missed by her family and friends.
Juanita is survived by her children, 25 grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren and 45 great great grandchildren, and sisters; Veola Thompson of Bluff, AR and Reola Bealer of Ponca City, OK.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers; Josh Bell, Jr, Alfonso Bell, Percy Bell and Roy Bell, sisters; Rosie Wilburn, Ruth Jones and Mary Mingo, son-in-law, Joe Shields and grandchildren; Abraham Swygert and Quinecia Swygert.
A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, May 28th, at Grace Memorial Chapel from 10am to 7pm. Her Graveside Service will be held the following day, Friday, May 29th, starting at 10am at the Ponca City I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
