Margie Jo Nicks passed away Friday, May 8th, 2020 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Margie Jo was born July 28, 1935 in Ponca City, the daughter of Mary Margaret (Sipe) and Kenton Giles Powell. Her father passed away when she was seven years old. Her mom later married Carmen H. Powell who had two sons, Dick and Dale. They all grew up in Ponca City. Margie graduated from Ponca City High School in 1953 with honors. She furthered her education at her beloved Oklahoma State University (formerly Oklahoma A&M College), and graduated in the 61st Commencement Exercises Class of 1956. Margie was a very intelligent woman, graduating college with a 4.0 GPA in 3 ½ years. She loved watching all OSU sports and would often be seen wearing an OSU shirt, bracelet, earrings, or any other accessory of Pistol Pete.
After college, Margie was employed with Continental Oil Company in Ponca City and later transferred to their corporate office in Houston. She was an outgoing woman with a love of people and socializing. She married Gene Nicks in Ponca City in 1955 and unto them a son, Michael Edward, was born premature only living for a few days. A few years later, Margie Jo became very ill with a brain abscess that required numerous surgeries. This left her with a lifelong struggle to find her words, but did not diminish her intense intelligence, wit, and charm. She was a competitive board game player, spending hours and hours playing board games with three generations of young nieces and nephews. Sometimes she would even let you win. She bowled with her mother on league teams at the Ponca City bowling alley and spent numerous hours volunteering her office skills at the Opportunity Center. She was a Camp Fire Girl leader and was active in the First Christian Church. She loved to bake cookies for her nieces and nephews. Her Snickerdoodles were legendary with those who loved her. She was an avid traveler and spoke often of her trips to all 50 States. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Her survivors include her nephew Chris Cremers and wife Peggy; nephew Matt Cremers and wife Martha; nephew Greg Cremers; niece Debbie Thomas, niece Julie Vap and husband Gary, and nephew Ronnie Cremers and wife Michelle, all of Ponca City. She had numerous great nephews and nieces which she adored including Kyle Cremers, Zach Cremers, Brandon Connelly, Blake Connelly, Blaine Cremers, Brenton Cremers, Brittany Daine, Kara Thomas, Parker Thomas, Jacob Vap, Caleb Vap, Daniel Vap, Jordan Cremers, Morgan Cremers, Trey Cremers, and Torran Cremers, their spouses and 19 great, great nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins that she enjoyed the occasions on which she was able to visit. She is survived by extended family members including Phyllis Moriarty, Linda Cremers, and James Wallace.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her only son Michael Edward, her beloved sisters Kenny Lou Cremers and Carolee Powell, a nephew Ted Thomas, and a great niece Korban JuliAnne Cremers.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10am on Thursday, May 21st, 2020, at the Ponca City I.O.O.F. Cemetery where her cremated remains will be laid to rest, Pastor Larry Metzger presiding.
