Harold D. Allen, father of Ponca Citian Kay Anthony and former Ponca Citian Sara Sue Van Marel, died on Friday, May 23, 2003 at his home at Westminster Village. A private burial service was held on May 24 at IOOF Cemetery.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will be at the Albright United Methodist Church, 128 South Palm, at 2:00 pm today, May 25. Dr. Sheila Combs-Francis, pastor, will officiate.
Harold Allen was born on March 8, 1914, in what is now Laverne, California, but moved to Laverne, OK with his parents, Maggie Lee Dungan Allen and Ira D. Allen a year later. He received his education there, graduating with the class of 1931. He came to Ponca City, first working for the WPA, and then was a long time employee of Midwest Creamery, where he ended his career as Plant Superintendent. In 1968, he moved to Dallas, TX where he accepted a position with Oak Farm Dairies, also as a Plant Superintendent. He retired from there at age 65 in 1978, and returned to Ponca City, where he resided until his death.
He was a member of Albright United Methodist Church where he had served in many capacities as a church leader, among them a Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent and a youth sponsor.
He was married to Elizabeth Louise Wright on Easter Sunday at the Evangelical Church, now Albright United Methodist, on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1937. To this union was born two daughters, Sara Sue (Susie) Van Marel, and Kay Anthony. He also had two sons-in-law, Carl Van Marel and Robert L. Anthony. Six grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren survive him, as well as a brother, Russell Allen. His parents, wife a great grandchild and sisters, Cleatha Holcomb, Leatha Howard, Opal Brown and Frieda Rives preceded him in death.
Memorials to Mr. Allen may be made to Albright United Methodist Church.
