The family will be at 3422 Meadow Lane. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory.
Shelly Jolene Martin was born May 25, 1957 at Arkansas City, Kansas a daughter of Earl Edward White and Ruth Mae (Watson) White. She attended Ponca City schools and also had attended Finley rural school in the Round Grove community. She was a good student and active in the 4-H program and had won ribbons and awards for her projects in soil conservation and animal husbandry while in school. She had many happy memories of her horse “Beauty” and the Trailblazers group rides during her school years.
In her youth she was very involved in activities with the Nazarene church and became a member of St. Luke’s Church of the Nazarene in 1970. She accompanied her sister on guitar at revivals and contests in the Northwest Oklahoma Nazarene District and was singing during a revival at St. Luke’s the night she met her future husband. She also loved sports and played Women’s Softball with the Moody Parks team as a girl and later with the Ladies Softball team at church after her marriage. She was also a big fan of the Po-Hi wrestling team and used to love to attend the matches with her mother and sister. Her hobbies included embroidery work and collecting ceramic pigs and when her sons were growing up she kept busy taking part in all their activities at church and school. She spent many happy times taking her sons and their friends fishing.
She was married June 18, 1976 to Carl D. Martin at St. Luke’s and was a hardworking and devoted wife and mother. She worked at Titus Mfg. before her marriage and later in the Conoco cafeteria. She had also worked at the McCord school cafeteria before employment at Westminster Village in 1990. She loved her job at Westminster Village and was known for her good nature and funny jokes. The co-workers and residents there were like her own family and she felt that she had found her “niche” at Via Christi. She was promoted to Director of Housekeeping and Laundry in 1992 and held that position until 2001 when she had to resign because of health issues.
She had suffered with the complications of diabetes for over 20 years but she did her best to be cheerful and uncomplaining. She was able to remain at home until her husband was no longer able to care for her. She had entered Westminster Village as a resident over 8 years ago and had been at Garland Road Nursing and Rehab at Enid since April 2013 and the days were long. She always tried to work closely with the Activities staff and had made handmade greeting cards and had worked at quilting with other residents. She looked forward to visitors and especially from her little dog “Katie” who always cheered her up. A big regret was not being able to be more involved with her grandsons who she loved dearly and not being able to attend church and family gatherings. Her solid Christian faith carried her through a lot of trials and suffering and we know she is with her Lord and no longer in pain.
She is survived by her husband Carl Martin; two sons Andy Martin and Jake Martin and wife Lindsey; a sister and her husband Lori and Steve Russell, all of Ponca City; a brother David White, of Fairview,Ok. a brother-in-law Chuck Martin and three grandsons, Tashi, Cash and Tommy Martin, all of Ponca City; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Shannon White in infancy.
The family will be at 3422 Meadow Lane following the service.
