Michael Kent Stewart
September 29, 1955 - April 30, 2025
Michael K. Stewart, 69, went home to his Lord and Savior on April 30, 2025. The longtime Bartlesville resident passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas, after a courageous, 16-year battle against cancer.
Mike was born in Ponca City, Okla., to Bob and Shirley Stewart on September 29, 1955. He was raised in Newkirk, Okla., alongside his sister Rhonda. He graduated high school there with the Class of 1973. From a young age, Mike played baseball and later coached his kids' baseball teams. In high school, the lanky lad was tough enough to play football, earning all-conference guard accolades, and talented enough to play the trumpet in band. Throughout his school years, Mike worked alongside his dad hauling hay.
Mike attended Oklahoma State University where he later graduated with an Agriculture degree. While a college student, Mike met the love of his life Tammy (Leatherman) Stewart through mutual friends, including his sister, after a rodeo in Newkirk in 1975. Mike and Tammy were married in Newkirk, October of 1977, and together, they raised seven wonderful children.
Over the years, Mike and Tammy also opened their home and hearts to foster and care for many more kids God put in their lives. The Stewarts already had four kids when they fostered a baby girl and went on to adopt her when she was three. They cared for a son's teammate for several years and today, that beloved childhood friend credits Mike for his work ethic.
Early on in life, Mike worked in the frac tank service business for about 10 years, even becoming a part owner before landing his 34-year career job at Conoco Inc. in Ponca City in 1991. He was later transferred to Bartlesville and held numerous positions at ConocoPhillips and Phillips 66. Mike was still working as Facilities & Services Manager of the Phillips 66 Bartlesville campuses and a longstanding member of the Bartlesville Leadership Team.
Mike was the hardest worker whether hauling hay or selling peaches at the farm or working in the office. He loved his family and lived to provide for them, even working up to his final months on earth. Early in their marriage, Mike and Tammy mowed lawns and chopped firewood to make extra money and take care of their growing family. Both of them loved to travel and go watch their children and grandchildren play numerous sporting events over the years.
In addition to working and caring for kids and grandkids, Mike made time to earn his masters in Project Management from Villanova University. He also continued to nurture other young minds by teaching Process Technology part-time for several years at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa - not just when his job was based in Ponca City, but when he made the long drive back and forth from Bartlesville.
Later on in life, Mike also served as a CASA Volunteer Advocate working with the court system for the best interests of children who experienced abuse or neglect. He had been inspired by Tammy's mom who was a CASA volunteer. One of Mike's proudest CASA achievements was helping three siblings in foster care get adopted by a single loving family. That was the kind of stuff that mattered to Mike.
Mike was a faithful believer and talked to the head guy every day. He walked the talk and was faithful to the people he loved the most. His favorite Bible passage was the 23rd Psalm and Mike was like a shepherd to the people around him, at home, at work, and everywhere God called him to serve. Mike was the same genuine person regardless of who was around him. More than anything else, Mike was a kind man and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him dearly.
Mike is survived by his loving wife Tammy Stewart of 47 years and their seven children: Ashley Hunt (husband Tim) of Davenport, Iowa; Mat Stewart (wife Beth) Newkirk, OK; Seth Stewart (wife Crista) of Brookings, Oregon; Jacob Stewart (wife Crystal) and Misty Spotted Bear (husband Jeremy), all of Bartlesville; and Abram Stewart and MaryAnna Stewart of the home.
Mike was further blessed with 16 grandchildren: Gabriella Hunt, Isabella Hunt, Preston Hunt, Oliver Hunt, Makenzie Hunt, Braden Stewart, Baylee Stewart, Nathan Stewart, Ashley Mapa, Jade Leddy, Jonna Leddy, Malia Leddy, Allyson- Stewart, Madison Stewart, Garrett Stewart, Mollie Kay Spotted Bear, and Mia Spotted Bear; and one great grandson, Daniel True.
He is also survived by his sister Ronda Mefford and her husband George Mefford Jr. Owasso and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mike was preceded in death by his loving parents Bob and Shirley Stewart and great grandson Easton.
Mike will also be missed by his work family at Phillips 66 and the Stewart family would like to thank them for all their faithful support and kindness. Deepest thanks also go to all the wonderful medical staff at MD Anderson who helped him throughout his long battle for the past 16 years, especially the dialysis nurses who have become cherished friends in recent months.
Mike's family will receive friends on Thursday, May 8 from 6-7 p.m., at the Davis Family Funeral Home & Crematory - Walker Brown Chapel, 918-333-7665, 4201 Nowata Rd, Bartlesville. Visitation will also be held on Thursday from 11-8.
Services will be held on Friday, at 10:30 a.m., May 9, 2025, at First Wesleyan Church Bartlesville, 1776 Silver Lake Road, Bartlesville, OK. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in the Newkirk Cemetery.
