Merle L. Ferguson, former resident of Ponca City, passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at the Homestead Assisted Living Center in Wichita, Kansas. She was 89. Merle was born on October 11, 1920 the daughter of Calvin Davis and Danny Rains Davis in Washington, Oklahoma. She received her early education at Ladd Elementary School and graduated in 1939 from Washington High School in Washington, Oklahoma.

Merle married Eldon Sherman Ferguson on December 25, 1938 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The couple made their first home in the Rio Grande Valley in Harlingen, Texas where Eldon worked for Gulf States Oil Co. In 1942 they moved to Ponca City and in 1946 they moved to a farm in Osage County. They later purchased a farm in Kay County in 1951 and resided there for 47 years. Merle was a longtime member of the Longwood Baptist Church in Ponca City. She enjoyed traveling and had been to several foreign countries. Merle was very family oriented and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters, Joyce Lumry and husband, Wesley of Wichita, Kansas and Sandra Coulson and husband, Mike of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida five grandchildren, Wesley Lumry, Keith Lumry, Valerie Lumry, Bradley Newman and Gregory Newman three great grandchildren, Zoei Lumry, Cullen Lumry and Jack Newman and one sister, Bonnie Crow.

She is preceded in death by her parents husband son, Eldon Wayne Ferguson three sisters and three brothers.

Casket bearers for the service will be her grandsons and sonsinlaw.

The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Longwood Baptist Church with Pastor, Steve Harden officiating. She will be laid to rest in Longwood Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Longwood Baptist Church, 1885 North Longwood Road, Ponca City, Oklahoma 74604. The family will be at the funeral home on Saturday before the service.
