The funeral for Charles Virgil Emerson, 92, of Ooltewah, Tenn., formerly of Ponca City, will be 2 p.m. today at Northeast Baptist Church, Ponca City. Larry E. Nigh will officiate. Burial will follow in Longwood Cemetery . Arrangements are by Trout Funeral Home and Crematory, Ponca City. Family visitation will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. today at the church.
He was born Feb. 4, 1917, in Plains, Kan., to Charles Albert and Ollie Mae Ragsdale Emerson and died Monday, July 13, 2009, at his home. He was a graduate of East High School, Wichita, Kan. He met his wife, Betty Mae Jordan, in Wichita where he began his career as a Linotype operator at the Wichita Eagle. They later moved to Blackwell and then to Ponca City, where he worked for the Ponca City News, retiring in 1987.
He was a longtime member of Northeast Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher for the men's class. He also was a member of the Masons.
Surviving are two sons, Eddy Emerson of Enid, and Paul Emerson of Diamond, Mo.; one daughter, Kathleen Stulce of Ooltewah; one brother, Irvin Emerson of Jovette, Mo.; one sister, Billie Luckner of DeSoto, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Mae, one brother and three sisters.
