Lewis William Randall of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Friday evening, June 26, 2009, at the age of 87 years.
Lewis William Randall was born on September 22, 1921, in Alma, Nebraska, to Vernon and Emily (Reynolds) Randall. His family lived in Nebraska until the age of four when they moved to Jennings, Kansas, where he attended elementary school. In 1935 they moved to Houston, Missouri, where he graduated from high school in 1939. Following his education he farmed in Nebraska until he entered the United States Coast Guard on October 13, 1942, where he was stationed at Curtis Bay, Maryland. He was later assigned to the USS Hutchinson and served two years in the South Pacific and Philippines. He later served for eight months in Fremantle, Australia, where he met his wife, Gloria. He was honorably discharged on February 12, 1946. He married Gloria Faye Short on June 25, 1947, in Los Angeles, California, and they settled in Kansas where they managed and owned a restaurant. In 1951, he attended National Railroad College in Omaha, Nebraska,and upon completion of his training he worked as a depot agent for Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming. After two years they moved to Woodruff, Kansas, where he worked as a territorial equipment manager for Richardson Manufacturing. In 1969 they moved to Blackwell where he managed the Long's John Deere dealership and enjoyed meeting many people from the community. He retired in 1984 and following retirement he enjoyed farming, working with cattle and other farm related projects. They enjoyed traveling throughout the fifty states and took a six month trip around the world. They also enjoyed returning to Australia on many occasions. He was a fifty years member of the Masonic Lodge and held a lifetime membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also served as commander of the American Legion in Kansas.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Gloria Randall of Blackwell, Oklahoma; two sons, William Randall and wife Regena of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Robert Randall of Kaw City, Oklahoma; three sisters, Wilma Ballard on Mountain Grove, Missouri, Irene Longwell and husband Bob of Greely, Colorado, and Leveda Douglas and husband Walter of Houston, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Tracy Bacon and husband Alex of Los Angeles, California, Michelle Dandridge of Los Angeles, California, Dustin Randall of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Lori Shaw and husband Craig of Yukon, Oklahoma, Roxanne Kerby of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Elizabeth Napier and husband Bobby of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Amy Kerby of Fayetteville, Arkansas; five great grandchildren, Dallas Randall of Edmond, Oklahoma, Austin, Aaron and Juliana Shaw of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Kira Bacon of Los Angeles, California; and seven nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Karen Faye Dandridge.
Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 1st in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Dittman of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Military rites will be performed by the Blackwell American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
