Ermil Chitwood
1921 - 1993
Ermil L. Chitwood died in Blackwell Regional Hospital at 8:55 p.m. Wednesday, May 12. He was 72.
His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 17, in the First Christian Church with Rev. Floyd Diehm officiating. Burial will be in the Blackwell IOOF Cemetery.
There will be visitation at Roberts Funeral Home until 8:30 a.m. Monday, then at the church from 9 a.m. until time for the funeral. The casket will be closed for the service.
Mr. Chitwood was born April 22, 1921 in Lamont, the son of Albert and Ida (Chapman) Chitwood. He grew up in Lamont and attended Lamont schools, graduating in 1940. He worked at Kroger Grocery Store as a butcher.
He married Laura Shupe in Lamont and they settled in Blackwell where he continued to work for Kroger Grocery until 1943 when he began working for Blackwell Zinc Company in the smelter's mill.
His wife preceded him in death May 14, 1959, and he later married Lois Johnson on Oct. 13, 1972, in Blackwell. He retired from Blackwell Zinc when the plant closed in 1974. He then worked in construction with a company at Conoco in Ponca City.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Harmony Sunday School Class, the IOOF and Chikaskia Masonic Lodge 109.
Survivors are his wife, Lois; one daughter, Irene Hudson, Canyon, Texas; one son, Gary Chitwood, Blackwell; three stepdaughters, Patsy Shuford, Atlanta, GA.; Becky Love, Nashville, Tenn., and Darla Reid, Tulsa; one stepson, Rick Johnson, Bradenton, Fla.; 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one brother, Clarence Chitwood, Peckham.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Blanche Holt.
Memorials in his name have been suggested for the First Christian Church or First Baptist Church.
