Millie Barrows of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Claremore, Nursing Home in Claremore, Oklahoma, at the age of 88 years.

Millie Gene Barrows was born on September 8, 1923, in Kusa, Oklahoma, to Eugene Thomas and Millie Jane (Lee) Pierce. She grew up in Blackwell and graduated from the Blackwell Public Schools. During World War II, Millie lived in Wichita, Kansas, working at the Boing aircraft plant as one of the original “Rosie the Riveter.” After the war, she married James Howard Neal on September 20, 1945, in Cameron, Texas and he preceded her in death on October 24, 1970. Millie worked on the farm with her husband raising three daughters and one son. After Howard’s death, she continued to live on the farm for many years. She married Henry Edward Barrows on May 14, 1981, in Braman, Oklahoma, and he preceded her in death on February 12, 2003. Millie and Ed loved to travel and go on fishing trips. They traveled the United States with their fifth wheel camper, also taking cruises and visiting other countries. Millie especially enjoyed a trip to Ireland, Scotland, and England. After Millie’s health declined, she moved to Claremore, living at the Brookfield Assisted Living Center. She remained active enjoying all the functions that were provided. She especially enjoyed socializing with her friends, playing cards, bingo and lots of arts and crafts.

She is survived by one daughter, Helen Moore of Claremore, Oklahoma; one sister, Cleone Deichman of Blackwell, Oklahoma; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jimmy Ray Neal; two daughters, Connie Gale Grace and Carla Gene Todd; one brother, Lawrence Spoon; and one sister, Arlene Sawyers.

Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at the Roberts and Son Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Glendon Sanders, Blackwell First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Grady Moore, Ryan Moore, Toby Grace, Lonnie Grace, Brian Todd and Joel Deichman.

A memorial has been established in her honor with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Cancer Fund, and the American Diabetes Association c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 West Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
