Ivan Ballard former resident of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Tuesday, December 7, 2010, in the Cedar Crest Nursing Home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, at the age of 92 years.

Ivan Ballard was born on July 16, 1918, in Verden, Oklahoma, to Joseph A. and Hattie (Gentry) Ballard. He grew up in Verden attending Verden Public Schools and working on the family cotton farm. He entered the United States Army on April 16, 1941, serving during World War II. Following his discharge on September 3, 1945, he returned home and married Nannie Bell Whitley on October 4, 1946, in Wellington, Kansas. Following their marriage they settled in Blackwell and began working as a miller for International Multifoods retiring after thirty-eight years of service. Together the couple raised four of their nephews following the death of their father. In 2002 they moved to Emporia, Kansas, to make their home and be near their daughter. His wife preceded him in death on March 27, 2007, and in 2009 he moved to Broken Arrow to be near his son. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2855. He enjoyed woodcarving, carpentry and pecan farming.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Wente of Emporia, Kansas; his son, Phil Ballard of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; a brother, R. L. Ballard of Wichita, Kansas; six grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lero, Billy and Foy; and three sisters, Nellie, Jewell and Neeter.

Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 10th in the First Church of the Nazarene in Blackwell with the Rev. Herb Berkley officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery with military rites performed by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Serving as honorary casketbearers will be Kenny Jernigan, Dayle McGaha, J. P. McBride, Doug McBride, James McBride and Donald McBride. Casketbearers will be Phillip Ballard Jr., Jeremy Ballard, Preston Cates, Chuck Jeffries, Jacob Wente and Andrew Harp.

A memorial has been established in his honor with the First Church of the Nazarene in Blackwell in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.

A family visitation will be on Thursday evening, December 9th from 6 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
