Services for John M. Pierce, 82, were 3 p.m. Saturday at
First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Branch officiating. Interment followed
at Condon
Grove Cemetery.
Born March 17, 1917, at Hereford, Texas, to Arthur C. and Martha E. Poindexter
Pierce, he died March 16, 2000, at a local nursing home. He was preceded in
death by one brother, Raymond Pierce.
He married Neelie Reed Feb. 3, 1946, at Hereford.
A veteran of World War II, Pierce had served in the United States Army Air
Corps. He lived the majority of his life in the Texas panhandle, working for the
United States Bureau of Mines. After his retirement, he worked briefly as a
painter. He and his wife moved to Milburn in 1997 to be near their daughter. He
was active with Cal Farley's Boys-Girls Ranch at Amarillo, Texas, where he was
named "Honorary Cowhand." He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters, Deborah Sweatt,
Tishomingo, and Donna Jones, Weatherford; one son, Danny Pierce, Liberal, Kan.;
one brother, Ulys Pierce, Hereford; 10 grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
Bearers are Danny Smith, Bill Graham, Nicholas Jones, Travis Jones, Glen Shirley
and Monte Smith. Honorary bearers are Cason Smith, Kevin Smith, Joshua Pierce
and James Pierce.
Memorials may be made to Cal Farley's Boys-Girls Ranch or Johnston County
Memorial Hospital.
Services are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home.
