Nahoma Faye Burnam, age 93, of
Austin, Texas, formerly of Greer
County, passed away Sunday, May 12,
2013, at an Austin, Texas Nursing
Center.
Mrs. Burnam was born in the Ladessa
Community, in Greer County, on
January 7, 1920, to Herbert and
Lillie (Payne) Thompson. Growing up
in the White Flat Community and
graduating from White Flat, she
married the love of her life, Lloyd
“Buster” Burnam, on July 27, 1940,
in Blair, and they spent the next
sixty-eight wonderful years together
before his death on December 29,
2008. They farmed until 1957, in the
Vinson area. In 1957, they moved to
Wisconsin and ran a dairy until
1965. Moving to Herford, Texas, they
spent ten years before moving to
Longview, Texas in 1975. In
Longview, they built wooden
furniture and crafts for many years
until moving to Mangum in 1997. In
2012, she moved to Austin, to make
her new home.
Faye had many jobs in her 93 years
of life. Big sister to Elton and
Peggy began her journey on the
cotton and dairy farm. She helped
with chopping and picking cotton,
milking cows, tending the babies and
garden, and helping with the
cooking, cleaning and washing.
Sewing was a necessary skill she
used for 80 plus years until her
eyesight made threading a needle
impossible. All the kids, grands and
great-grands have stuffed rabbits or
bears that she made from old quilts.
Most of the family members have
pictures taken in clothes she made
for them.
Next to raising her own children,
Faye was a help in raising six
grandchildren and several great
grandchildren. Each one has stories
to tell about “Grannie Faye” or
“Nanny” as she was affectionately
known.
Faye was busy being a good neighbor
by baking bread, taking food, and
visiting the sick. At the age of 91,
Faye moved to a Rehabilitation
Nursing Home, in Austin. It was
there that one of her greatest works
was accomplished. Her roommate is
suffering from a debilitating
disease and is bedridden with no
speech ability. However, Faye knew
what she needed and made sure she
was well cared for by the staff. The
other residents are grieving because
Mom was a good friend and helped
brighten their days.
On Wednesday night, May 8, 2013,
Faye had a “spell”, and by 7:50 p.m.
on Mother’s Day, May 12, she left
this world for a better home. She
left her nursing home bed peacefully
with family by her side. Now, her
body will rest by her husband in
Independence Cemetery.
Preceded in death by her parents and
her husband.
She is survived by four
children, Mike Burnam and wife Pat
of Mangum, Sandy Burnam of Austin,
Texas, Garry Burnam of Sentinel,
Oklahoma and Marty Burnam and wife
Vicki of Gladewater, Texas; six
grandchildren; twelve great
grandchildren and one great-great
grandson; one sister, Peggy Cooksey
and husband Frank; one brother,
Elton Thompson and wife Joella along
with many other relatives and
friends.
Funeral services for Faye Burnam
will be at 2 p.m., Friday, May 17,
2013, at the Mangum Church of Christ
with Gary Dement officiating. A
private interment will follow under
the direction of Greer Funeral Home
of Mangum.
The family will greet friends at
Greer Funeral Home on Thursday, May
16, 2013, from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m.
