Leo Vincent Freville was born August 23, 1923 to Emil Charles
and Santina Murachdle Freville in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He
departed this life on October 24, 2011 at Altus, Oklahoma. He
was orphaned at an early age, and he and his siblings were
raised by his grandmother. He remembers walking five miles to
the first school he attended and said that the Michigan winters
were Mighty Cold! Later he sold newspapers in downtown Grand
Rapids when the edition came out at midnight.
He dropped out of High School to join the Marines in 1941 and earned his GED while in the Service. He fought in the Pacific War Theater during WWII where his plane was shot down and he spent ten days afloat, alone on a raft, before he was rescued. He also served in the Korean War and later in Viet Nam where he was severely injured. Leo was a member of the Gould American Legion and the Corinth Baptist Church.
Leo is survived by his wife Willodene Perdue Freville; by one son, Roy Freville of Albany, Georgia; one daughter, Joy Key of Bridgeport, Georgia; two step-children, Mike Burns of Mountain Park, Oklahoma and Cindy Burns of Lehigh Acres, Florida. His surviving brothers are Howard Freville of Cypress, California and Emil Freville of Wisconsin. His sisters are June Kilbourne of Michigan and Leona Powney also of Michigan.
His parents and one brother, Joe preceded him in death.
