May 22, 1916 - Jan 27, 2015

Harmon County Funeral Home

Omega Green, wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother lived a long and rewarding life….98 rich years. She went home on January 27, 2015 at 5:00 a.m. at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Hollis, Oklahoma.

Her birth on May 22, 1916 occurred on an old dirt farm north west of Hollis in the Westview Community. She was the fifth child in a family of seven children born to James and Sallie “Yoes” Bayless. Needless to say, times were hard.
She shared a bed with two sisters and that bed actually resided in the living room of the four room house. She would laugh about waking up on cold winter days and there would be a dusting of snow on top of the covers.

Since she ran so fast, her mother, Sallie gave her the job of chasing down the chickens and delivering them to get their necks wrung. Omega was known to brag about the one luxury that her family did have…an outdoor toilet…a four seater!!
Her humble beginnings gave her the strong fortitude and the will to push on…no matter what. Her favorite saying to those who would complain was “Hush! Just grit your teeth and do it!”
She was a tough little tom-boy who loved playing marbles with the boys and riding horses with her brothers. Her favorite horse was “Old Dick” who took her on many a wild ride on the family dirt farm.
Omega began her education at Fairview Schools for the first three years and from there she attended Westview Schools until her graduation in 1934. She sang in school trios and quartets but her true love was sports. She was an outstanding athlete in both basketball and softball.

It was at an outsiders baseball game where she first spotted “Hoot” Green. When asked what her parents thought of Hoot, Omega replied, “Well, daddy liked him, but momma wanted me to marry someone with money!” They were married on May 26, 1934. Needless to say money was once again scarce!
Hoot and Omega were baptized together as young adults by Reverend Patterson of the First Baptist Church in Hollis. They joined the church and remained life-long members.
Omega owned and operated the “Tiger Den” a small cafe across from the Hollis High School. She served many a meal to the local students for over twelve years. After closing the “Tiger Den” she was employed by the Burlington Sheet Factory in Memphis, Texas for seven years. Her last employment was at Kellwood’s Blue Jean Factory in Hollis, Oklahoma.

Omega participated in community activities and enjoyed being a member of the local women’s Criterion Club for many years.
A strong work ethic helped to forge a seventy-one year union which produced three daughters, eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. Omega often said “All I ever wanted was a boy…all I ever got was three stinking girls”. Her girls would just laugh because they knew that she really did love them.

Those survivors include, three daughters, DaJuana Neal of Whitesboro, Texas, Kay Hay and her husband, J. H. of Liberal, Kansas, and Marsha Leathers and her husband, Jim of Harrah, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.

Family members preceding her in death were her husband, Wilbur “Hoot” Green; parents, James and Sallie Bayless; two brothers, Scivern “Chick” Bayless and Dowe “Spot” Bayless; four sisters, Evadna Stigler, Mae Lunn, Dortha Lea Royal, and Madge Bayless; one son-in-law, Dearl Neal; and three great grandchildren, twins, Nathan and Nicholas Hay, and Christian Hoch.

Funeral Services are at 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Harmon County Funeral Home Chapel with John Cox officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery under the direction of Harmon County Funeral Home of Hollis.
