Alicia Valdez Benavidez, age 70, of Altus, formerly of Hollis, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 30, 2011, at Plantation Village Nursing Home, in Altus.
Mrs. Benavidez was born on April 2, 1941, In Robstown, Texas to Jacob and Facunda (Hernandez) Valdez. In 1959, she married Valentine “Sonny” Benavidez and they moved to Clinton, Oklahoma. After a short time, they moved back to Robstown and in 1965, they moved to Hollis. With Valentine’s job, as a ginner, they lived in several locations throughout Texas and Oklahoma. Through the years, Alicia helped support the family by working at the sewing factory in Childress, cleaning houses and hoeing cotton. In 1987, they retired, in Hollis, where she lived until moving to Altus, in June of 2011, because of her declining health. Playing Bingo and attending her church, Templo LaHermosa were two of her favorite things to do.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Salvador Benavidez, one granddaughter, Leticia Benavidez and two brothers, David Valdez and Trino Valdez, she is survived by six sons, Valintine Benavidez of Oklahoma City, Joe Benavidez of Hollis, Martin Benavidez of San Angelo, Texas, Jacob Benavidez and wife Janie of Altus, Ruben Benavidez and wife Heather of Hollis and Bobby Ray Sanders of Oklahoma City; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; five sisters, Maria Rodriguez, Ester Martinez, Ofelia Riojas, Rosa Valdez and Yolanda Valdez; two brothers, Jacobo Valdez and Roberto Valdez along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Alicia Benavidez will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at Harmon County Funeral Home Chapel, in Hollis, with Pastora Sally Saldana officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery under the direction of Harmon County Funeral Home.
