Tammy was born in Hobart, Oklahoma on September 28, 1959, to Bobbie Lee and Nelda June (Huggens) Wiggington. After graduating from Hobart High School in 1977, she attended Western Oklahoma State College, in Altus, where she met the love of her life, Don Mitchell. After her graduation, she began working as a bank teller for First National Bank in Hobart. Don completed his associate’s degree and began his bachelor’s degree at Cameron University while they were dating. During the summer between his junior and senior year, they were married on June 5, 1981, in Altus, and spent the next thirty-one years together before her untimely death. After graduation, they took jobs at Merritt School where Tammie was the activity’s secretary for the next sixteen years. In 1998, the family moved to their farm home, west of Reed where they lived until her death. After moving to the farm, Tammie drove the Vo-Tech bus to Sayre for a short time and in October 1999, she began working as a deputy in the Greer County Assessor’s Office, where she worked until her health began to fail, in January of 2013. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Tammie supported her husband and two boys in every project they undertook.
Preceded in death by her parents, Bobbie Lee and Nelda June Wiggington and her mother-in-law, Joyce Mitchell, Tammie is survived by her husband, Don, of the home; two sons, Brandon Mitchell and wife Kurby of Silverton, Texas and Michael Mitchell of Stillwater; one grandson, Baron Mitchell; her father-in-law Burl Mitchell of Reed; her sister-in-law Sheri Mulkey of Granite; two nieces, Becca Mulkey and Kelly Mulkey along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Tammie Mitchell will be at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Mangum High School Auditorium with Todd McRay officiating. Interment will follow at Cave Creek Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
